Bitcoin ATM is not a news for us. The biggest thing is it appears on the Xinwen Lianbo of CCTV on 28 October. This makes the last item of the Xinwen Lianbo today.

In case you don't know what it is, Xinwen Lianbo, literally "News Simulcast", is a daily news programme produced by China Central Television (CCTV). It is shown simultaneously by most terrestrial television channels in mainland China, making it one of the world's most-watched programmes.

A more important point is that Xinwen Lianbo is the MOST important political propaganda of CCTV. Any news appearing on it has to be seriously censored. The appearance of Bitcoin on Xinwen Lianbo is a really strong signal that the Chinese government, aka. the Chinese Communist Party, does not hate Bitcoin.

The link is here: http://video.sina.com.cn/p/news/v/2013-10-28/193663075917.html

This is the transcript:

Quote
According to Canadian media, the world's first Bitcoin ATM will be launched in Canada this week. With the hand scanner, users can exchange between Canadian Dollar and Bitcoin with the ATM. Before this, people could only exchange Bitcoin on the Internet. Bitcoin is a virtual currency. It can be used to buy goods on the Internet, and even pay house rent. According to the latest market information, one bitcoin can exchange approximately 1200 CNY

You should also note that there is only 30 minutes for Xinwen Lianbo per day, and only less than 1/4 of the time is for "International news" like this. The other international news today was "U.S. surveillance scandal continues to ferment"

How valuable Xinwen Lianbo is? This year, the TV commercials around Xinwen Lianbo costs totally 5.4 billion CNY (887.4M USD). It equivalents to 14.79M CNY (2.43M USD) per day. So the Bitcoin ATM (and Bitcoin) has just enjoyed a free advertisement of >1M USD.

It was just about the Canadian Bitcoin ATM (the article had appeared a while back in the western press).

Nothing to get too excited about (other CCTV reports were of more interest than this one).

It seems you don't get my point. The Bitcoin ATM itself is not the BREAKING NEWS. The BREAKING NEWS here is Bitcoin ATM on Xinwen Lianbo (Please read my analysis above)

No. Xinwen Lianbo is VERY unique. It is not yet another CCTV programme. Read my analysis and probably the wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xinwen_Lianbo

It could be difficult for Westeners to understand the uniqueness of Xinwen Lianbo. It looks like an "Evening News" on CNN or BBC, but actually there is no comparable programme in Western Countries. As wikipedia puts it:

Quote
This program is used as a medium for the state to announce government announcements and meetings, commentaries on major economic and policy issues, and the activities of national leaders. The program reflects official positions of the Chinese government on a wide range of matters. Some accuse the program as serving more as a means for the state to divulge its political agenda rather than to examine the day's important news events.

Please note the bolded part. It is very true. The main objective of Xinwen Lianbo is to divulge or propagate political agenda.

It seems that not many of you feel excited. Actually, I see this as a bigger news than Baidu Jiasule accepting bitcoin. Be prepared for a Chinese-led party soon

Yes, this is very true. This is not yet another random financial chit chat programme. Bitcoin did appear on CCTV, but I consider those as only some chit chat programmes

Maybe we have some cultural understanding problem - my wife (who is Chinese) doesn't think it's relevant at all (but what would she know she was only born here).

So she wasn't grown up in China? As I said, it is difficult for Westerners to understand the communist China culture. If one wants to understand the CCP's latest agenda, Xinwen Lianbo is definitely among the top 3 channel.

TL;DR

The bottom-line message: CCP does not hate bitcoin. This is already the biggest news.

She only left China for our honeymoon - please I have lived here for 7 years and she has lived here for 30. How long have you lived in China?

(am guessing you are probably going crazy about the 0% commission on btcchina and trying to hype anything you can to do with China like I've seen others doing recently)

well, most of Chinese women hold the same opinion as your wife's, and they hate their husbands watching Xinwen Lianbo every evening. but Xinwen Lianbo is so important, that sightly different word used in it can indicate millions of business opportunities

In Hong Kong for >30 years. But I understand China much better than average Hong Konger

Every educated Chinese should know the uniqueness of Xinwen Lianbo. May be you should ask her to name another programme on CCTV that is more politically important than Xinwen Lianbo.

Xinwen Lianbo is unique because it's the only program required to be syndicated to ALL TV stations at 19:00. Basically, when you turn on your TV in China at 19:00, there is nothing else on, except Xinwen Lianbo. It is the voice of the CCP.
