BBT Carter recently visited the IBM Think 2018 conference to get a operational understanding at IBM Watson Cognitive and other technologies by IBM including IBM Hyperledger Fabric.

Detail on how that works: https://www.hyperledger.org/projects/fabric

Now why do we care about permissioned blockchains? Mainly due to the fact business and governments care on a few outstanding critical issues with current cryptocurrency highly distributed full ledger systems. Scalability.

Our argument is both cryptocurrencies will and can coexist for specific functions. The argument has been too linear (fiance, fiat) but missing the bigger picture. Finance and single global currency isn't were this technology stops at. We are all for cryptocurrency, our channel is dedicated to it. But being a realist in business functional integration hyperledger and like technologies will exist in the private, permissioned space. This is just the beginning and the foundation is getting put in place now.

Further detail on the permissioned systems and history around the open source space.
