I thought that smart contracts will be near to its death soon since Vitalik Buterin is doing another project and that can take over smart contracts but with the support of coinbase to ERC20 tokens, this will make ethereum based tokens stronger.

I think there are two reasons:
1) Ethereum has a very powerful dev team and community, the platform is very reliable and easy to use.
2) Ethereum are widely accepted by the investor to buy ico tokens, I think most exchanges has eth/usdt pair, that means the investor can easily to buy ico tokens by eth.
