I started using Bitcoin not that long ago, and I've been trying to figure out a good way to accumulate them, aside from paying for them of course, but it's been difficult and kind of frustrating.

First, I found some of the faucets, and there's a lot of those, but in general they don't seem to be worth bothering spending time with, aside from being a way to possibly have some BTC rather than nothing at all, and are way too slow to produce any meaningful amount of BTC oneself. Some of them don't even turn out to actually pay out anything, and even with the ones that do, the only way to earn much BTC through those seems to be by managing to somehow refer a large number of people to them, and get a percentage of what those people get wasting their time with it.

Then, at some point I found some sites offering BTC for things like surveys or downloads, and the BTC offered seemed appealing, but then the pages that would load clicking on the links would often look nothing like the descriptions, so that was rather deceptive, not giving me a very good impression of those, and I often doubt whether or not completing those will even actually unlock the BTC anyway, much like with other sites that claim to unlock stuff by doing things like completing surveys. Those generally seem to leave me hoping that the site isn't just a scam trying to bait people into doing that stuff for nothing.

And then there's the mining option, which sounded somewhat appealing until I realized that not only does it greatly wear on the hardware used to do it, to an extent that's essentially like stress testing, and of course consume more electricity, making the cost/benefit that much more questionable, but to effectively earn with that without having to be really, really lucky, it seems that one needs to have expensive specialized hardware that probably will be well obsolete within six months to a year anyway, or a server farm or something.

So anyway, does anyone have some helpful advice on how newbies like myself and others can get a good start of accumulating BTC, again aside from paying for it?

The answer to your question is the same as the answer to this question:

"How does someone obtain money without paying for it?"

This.  There is no "easy way" in making bitcoins.  Is there an "easy way" to make real money?
Don't treat bitcoins as a program, treat it like cash, make it a cash scenario.
Faucets really won't get you anywhere, selling things can make you a decent amount of bitcoins.
You could set up your own bitcoin related website and put up some ads, like bitads.net.
There is no definite way in earning bitcoins, each one is long, but if you do it right your bitcoins will come rolling in.

Playing poker for Bitcoins is good when first starting out because you can play in freeroll tournaments. It may take awhile to finally win one, but your skills will improve. Practice good bankroll management and never invest more than 10% of your bankroll in a game.

If you go to the gambling section, there are sites that give you 0.01 and for most of them, you can withdraw without playing. Also 777coin pays you 0.005 for the first time and then 0.001 for every day you come back and post.
