Power Supplies for 49 Port USB Hub

I've been browsing online trying to find some decent 5v power supplies and found these.

They are the Logisys power supplies, they offer 30A-40A depending on the power supply, you'll notice from the model numbers they only really offer a couple power supplies, they just change the fans/color between them.

The PS480D2 offers 5v@36A
The PS480D offers 5v@36A

The only difference I can see between these is that the D2 has 2 80mm fans instead of 1, I'm guessing this is because the PS480D isn't cooled well enough and fails prematurely. Of the two I'd get the PS480D.

The PS480E12 is the same 5v@36A power supply but with 1 120mm fan instead of 2 80mm fans, according to most reviews the 80mm fans found in the PS480D/PS480D2's are noisey, so this would probably be the better option if you are worried about noise.

The PS550A offers 5v@38A
The PS550E12 is the same 5v38A but with 1x 120mm fan instead of 2x 80mm again.

The PS575X offers 5v@40A, this is the highest amperage offered that I've found in these cheap power supplies, one can either get this or a $26 5v 40a switching power supply from ebay that only does 5v, I think this is the best deal out there for 40A at 5v, plus you don't have to snip up a bunch of wires to get it to work with the 49 port USB hub.


I ended up going with the PS55E12 as noise is an issue for me, I got it on amazon with prime shipping (Hover Hound will compare prices on newegg to amazon and tiger direct, handy for searching on newegg/buying on amazon)

How hot does your fuse get with all Erupters loaded and mining?

Not sure exactly, it isn't all that warm but I've got 2x 92mm noctua's and a 120mm fan blowing over it all so its hard to say.

Do you think the Hub itself needs cooling?  I hadn't really thought about that.

I have two Arctic Breezes blowing straight down on my 47 Erupters.  Those work great for the BE's.  But it's not doing squat for the Hub itself.

dont know if they have them over there but have a look for a make called Alpine
they use 120mm fans are pretty damn cheap and cope with some serious abuse 550w and 750w are there best

Why bother with an ATX power supply when you can get a standalone 5v 20/30/40/60A regulated power supply that has adjustable voltage from ~4.8~5.8v?

the hubs need the 24pin ATX connection... pretty much the only reason
also a normal PSU has a fan so much smaller risk of over heating

like vm1990 said, the BE 49 port hub has a 24 port ATX plug on it already, if I was using a bunch of el cheapeo 10 porters and soldered wires to the bottom of their barrel jacks, I probably would have gotten a 5v PSU.

OTOH I'm a big computer nerd and am always in need of a spare PSU so when I stop mining on these I'l have an extra PSU for emergencies, won't be good for anything heavy on 12v but it should be able to handle an 'average' computer just fine. If nothing else I can sell it later on too, its a cheap PSU to start with but $10-$15 + shipping on flea bay would help recoup costs.

yep thats the PS550E12BK, or the PS550E12 black, its the same just black:

I also use the PS550E12 (not black) and it works wonderfully, the only modification I've had to make is when plugging it in the plastic clip for the 24 pin connector got in the way so I bent it up pretty far.

Yep, I tried flexing the board up to get it in and finally just clipped the retaining clip off. Its very quiet and barely gets warm.

Im having issues with some miners not firing up, but Im not sure if its bad ports or something weird with the way its hub chained. I added the 49 block to its own port
on a mac mini (10.7). The mini already had a anker hub with 9 miners that was working fine. And now even some of them are not firing so it must be something
goofy. Have not had the time to trouble shoot it completely. Just got as many going as I could for now. Plan to narrow it down this weekend.

bitminter 1.4.2 is the client. Tried cgminer (with the kernel extension removed for the miners) and it would only ever see 7 no matter how I rearranged them. Even with only the anker plugged in it would see only 4 on it.

The first psu I used was a Rosewill rv350, it would power 40 sticks.  You could tell from the heat it was producing it was maxed out.

Next I used a Apevia ATX-AS520W, it runs all 49 ports, the fan blows cold air at the slowest speed, 24 pin wire bundle cold to the touch.  This psu has 3 fans that can be controlled, blue led's and green sleeves and connectors, yes, it's buttugly but works like a champ.

You want to use a Meanwell 5V PSU. They easily come in 45A+
I have been using 60A one for the longest time now and no problems. They also have 2 yr warranty so good to go.
