Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

exchanged Bitcoin for 60000 Worldcoin.
Later the Worldcoin blockchain was 51% attacked and the Worldcoins were ‘double spent’.

So this guy went through all this trouble to steal only $2000 ?

Just tried it.. same thing as before.. application has requested to terminate in anusual way...

I apologize for the slow response, I was away from the forum.  Some people have reported the same issue in irc earlier today.  The issue was resolved by copying the 6.4.6 worldcoin-qt + the libstdc++_6.dll to their 6.4.5 wallet.   Make sure you're also deleting everything but your wallet.dat in the %appdata% worldcoin folder.  For further assistance, please join our awesome community in irc: #worldcoin (freenode).  We have a lot of friendly people willing to assist.

Delete your Blockchain/Database within AppInfo/Roaming/WorldCoin if within windows before loading.

do NOT delete your wallet or conf file if you have one, but you should have your wallet backed up.

Hope this helps

Sorry, my mistake, didn't read all the instructions and just deleted the client folder instead. It's now working and downloading the chain.

For me... the mega page never loads... just a cloud and spinning gear.

Used the link from the main site... copy pasted link from here... all do the same... no DL just basic mega page.

EDIT finally got it but Mega was still troublesome... think it is on their end...

Owing to the sophisticated design of the MCX Now transaction system the website was able to detect the attack and shut off in defense.

I find this funny. Nice play on words to make it seems like MCXNOW did something to prevent this. Roll Eyes

I suppose their shutdown played a major role in the discovery of the problem and the fix.

If this would have been a coin the values decentralization MCXNOW would be short 62,000 WDC and coinhunter left to fit the bill

But who cares about "Decentralized" these days right?

I think you're missing an important point here: the moment someone controls >50% of the network hashrate the coin is effectively centralized.

Why do you think its such an issue if all you have to do is checkpoint a block and "rollback" the blockchain.

Congrats! WDC is no longer decentralized.

See above. Furthermore, decentralization doesn't mean lack of checkpoints. Everybody is free to use the old client and the double-spend leg of the blockchain. Only if the majority of users switch to the new client version the blockchain is effectively rolled back. But in that case everything is fine - the majority decides in a decentralized way.

I wonder which is greater. The total lost by legitimate miners due to the rollback. Or what coinhunter would have lost without it

This leads to interesting questions, indeed. What would have happened if only 6200 or 620 or 62 coins had been double spent? What if the ripped off entity hadn't been mcxNOW but only some nameless poor guy? What if the double spend had only been discovered several days later?

51% attacks have become a more or less regular reality, and the community needs to find a way to deal with this.

I realized this isnt the thread for this. Also i agree with most of what you said

WDC did everything they could.

Ill move the above to another thread and change topics.

I the real problem is there is really nothing else that could have been done. A system needs to be designed to prevent this yet stay decentralized. Voting systems are a great choice but a hard to prevent manipulation.

Perhaps some sort of decentralized checkpointing could take place. But then you sorta get into a proof of stake scenario. Perhaps higher #'s of confirmations could be used in the future if attacks persist. One of worldcoins greatest features is fast transaction. Even doubling them would keep it among the fastest
