<once again, apologies if this is in the wrong section, but...>

http://www.coindesk.com/adventurer-make-first-ever-bitcoin-transaction-south-pole/

1Gt1anYr6gEuiNgacFouhy4RUNQFH3YY9Y https://blockchain.info/address/1Gt1anYr6gEuiNgacFouhy4RUNQFH3YY9Y

Ideally, I would have loved the Bitcoin 100 to help fill the request, but now because of time constraint, among other factors, albeit an argument could be had, that's probably no longer possible, hence reaching out to the community, specifically to those with deeper pockets.

Quote
Thorkil Værge, head of Sirius Money, has pledged €1,000 (6.8 BTC) to Hanneche, who is undertaking the challenge to travel alone to both poles in a single year. He also says if Hanneche manages to raise more than 15 BTC, he will carry a bitcoin flag with him, if one can be made before his departure from South Africa on November 5th.

Thorkil Værge first mentioned the South Pole expediton here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=317249

While penning this post, I just so happened to have https://blockchain.info/address/1Gt1anYr6gEuiNgacFouhy4RUNQFH3YY9Y opened on another tab, and people ARE currently donating.

Please note in the last quote above that there's a request for a Bitcoin flag. It would be totally amazing if we could pull this outta our ass.

I am sure that his departure date will be a date worth remembering.

Somebody just donated ~$400 USD: https://blockchain.info/tx/634322904a71c71b6c86278f06bb04a0412d481dce9355cfc4a9edd93259e66d

I seriously see this getting funding without much effort, with me only probably playing a minor role now.

But there's still the issue of getting a Bitcoin flag in his hands.

Options?

I see no problem with the required funds being raised, ergo we need to concentrate on getting a Bitcoin flag in his hands ASAP.

Any suggestions? If there's an appropriate flag available, I will pay all shipping cost to make sure it gets there in time.

Find a flag.

Agree on the flag.

Entity that has flag and ships it will be reimbursed by me via bitcoins or cc. It MUST be expedient shipping regardless of the cost (within reason, for I don't want to pay for a chartered jet to deliver a flag)

$1,000 now.

I can hand make a flag and go to fed-ex Monday but there have got to be better options.

I'm not sure it would get there in time.

He leaves from Chile?

Who do we know in Chile?

Apologies for the cross post from the other thread:

Yeah me too. Ill send him a btc.

edit 1 btc sent.

also he only needs 5 more, im sure we can get this done!

Believe I just saw it hit, Goat.

I'm committed to paying for standard expedient shipping cost to get a flag in his hands before the deadline. If we had a design and know the size and of what material it should be made of, we can get Jason King of Sean's Outpost to embroidery one.

god damn what a bullish week, first the moon and now bitcoins on the poles, what is next?

Somehow I missed the moon article, but we know that Mars is out since it turned into a comet.

Looks like only ~$600 USD short, but truly feel it'll make it: https://blockchain.info/address/1Gt1anYr6gEuiNgacFouhy4RUNQFH3YY9Y

Boy, if I could pull getting a Bitcoin flag in his hands for the South Pole off, I would then truly earn my self-proclaimed moniker as The Most Interesting Bitcoiner in the World (TMIBITW).

I'm paying all expedient shipping cost to Chile if a flag can be procured.

Just reread the article, and it looks like ~$3,000 USD is needed for him to haul a flag to the South Pole. If that's the case, then we're ~$1K USD short, but seriously don't see a problem with that goal being reached.

Having a flag shipped in time is probably not too much of an issue if only WE HAVE A BITCOIN FLAG. I'm covering the cost of shipping. If a flag maker needs funded, then that shouldn't be too much of a problem either.

Note to self: Never take a trip with Goat. First he wants to go to the South Pole in the winter, now believes the expedition starts in Chile.

Quote
Having planted his native Valencia’s flag, and a French Tricolor at the north pole, he now expects to do the same at the South, leaving from Cape Town on November 5th and crossing Antarctica to arrive in Chile 80 days later.

To be fair, so did I. Imagine Goat and I on a road trip?

Just donated. Can't help with the flag though.

Would it have to be special material to survive the extreme cold?

Hell, I don't know! Guess I'll have to Google it. It probably has to be silk, standard flag material if I'm not mistaken.

The above task may be an impossibility, unless... http://www.fahnenfleck.co.za/

Our short turnaround time and wide range of specified products and services means that you get exceptional service and quality from an all-inclusive package.

The other option is having Jason King of Sean's Outpost embroidery a flag, a task he's up and and would donate, confirmed after speaking with him over the phone.

Although having it delivery to Cape Town by Monday afternoon is an impossibility, I suggested having it delivery to a base camp on Antarctica that Faycal may be stopping off at on his trek to the South Pole. Regular mail service to camps is available this time of the year, so there would be no problem with having a flag awaiting his arrival.

I'm sure he mapped out the expedition so that he wouldn't be carrying ALL his supplies from the get-go, stopping at at least one base camp in route. Sword Smith would have to verify if, or if not, that's the case.

I have relayed the information that I can. This is out of my hands now and up to the community.

Flag can be carried to the South Pole provided that it is delivered in the reception of the hotel RADISSON BLU HOTEL WATERFRONT, CAPE TOWN: http://www.radissonblu.com/hotel-capetown before Monday evening, November 4th. And provided that Faycal survives and that this mission is a success.

I live in Cape Town and will print a flag for the man and bring it to him. Just give me a design and size/specifications and I can go ask around for quotes etc. EDIT : Those who have been to Cape Town will know that NOTHING happens on Sundays, but I will be on it first thing Monday morning keep you guys updated.

It needs to be delivered at this hotel: http://www.radissonblu.com/hotel-capetown

[–]frankros 2 points 22 minutes ago
I can definitely deliver it, no problem. The question is how to print a flag so quickly. I'll go to a mall tomorrow morning and ask around. If all else fails, I will make one by hand with some arts and crafts material...fuck it.

[–]Sword_Smith 1 point 16 minutes ago

I never bothered to sign up to bitcointalk...I just lurk. But feel free to update them. Once I have more info on the flag. I'll mail the guy and organise when to bring it to him. In the mean time, please send me any designs.

thanks. They will not be open on Sundays (it's almost midnight on Saturday here) but the malls around here have to be open on Sundays, so I'll try them first. I'm not sure what material they will have available but it's probably going to be T-shirt quality. The rings, I'll have to try and fix on it myself.
Any ideas of designs will be very helpful
If the expenses are not insane, I will be happy to pay for them myself, no worries.

Currently, ~$700 USD short but climbing: https://blockchain.info/address/1Gt1anYr6gEuiNgacFouhy4RUNQFH3YY9Y

Only TMIBITW, of Lithuanian descent, can get a Frenchman Bitcoiner a Bitcoin Flag that he forgot to pack  Roll Eyes to his hotel in Cape Town in less than 48 hours, supplied by another Cape Townian(?) (a fellow Bitcoiner) so that it can be planted at the South Pole, whereupon an Italian pizza will be ordered using his smartphone, probably made in China, via bitcoins, a P2P currency, so that he can enjoy eating it once he's back to civilization in Chile ~40 days later of his 80 day trek.
