I will be able to start mining tomorrow with a 170 mh/s gpu. what should I mine for the most coins likely to increase in value or have value? I don't care about value right now, just eventual value.  |

I think that's a question everyone want to know. You can't really forcast the value of these coins.
It's useless to mine BTC with your GPU, in my opinion you should focus on Altcoins (such as Litecoin, Feathercoin etcetera). But that's just my opinion.

GPU mining is good ony for altcoins, but I dont believe any altcoin will increase much in future as these are used only for trading |

I started off GPU mining just to understand btc mining better. But to really do serious mining, think you're better off with an ASIC miner.
Previously using Radeon HD5870 with around 300MH/s.
Then move on to block erupter with around 330MH/s.
Difference is using GPU to mine draws constant 200 plus watts, while block erupter draws less than 10 watts.

Honestly. Don't mine. Just invest in Bitcoin and hope that it rises. It's still a risk but less of a risk than mining. Mining requires a lot of money to invest to get started and no guaranteed profit.

In fact USB block erupter draws about 2.5 watts. While you can by it for 0.04 BTC, you wont mine 0.04 BTC with it back |

You can always use http://www.coinchoose.com/index.php if you don't know which ALT to choose from. It works best if you sell to BTC immediatelly. It does not help to solve the eventual value in future problem |

If you must mine. Then choose your favorite alt coin and mine that. Unless, you have a lot of money to invest to mine Bitcoin.

right now litecoin seems to be on the way up so mayby you should point your GPU to a LTC pool?
Or maybe FTC if you want a lower difficulty and are mining with a single card?

You could always use an auto switching pool like hashcows.
hashcows automatically switches to the most profitable coin, and they allow you to either keep the alt coins, or they can automatically trade them into bitcoin for you.
