mining on a small linux server

Hello everyone, I read much about bitcoin mining with great hardware and so but nothing about a situation like mine.
I have a small ubuntu server turned on 24/7 that just serves a webserver and nothing much.
So I already pay electricity for it and I was wondering if it would be worth getting a cheap Radeon GPU to economically take advantage of my situation.... any thoughts or advice?

Mining BTC using either the CPU or a new GPU doesn't pay off. Even with ASICs you might not get a ROI. If you really want to use your server for mining, you could look into altcoins for that. I would recommend looking at http://primecoin.org if you want to do CPU mining and in case you get a new GPU https://litecoin.org/ or some other scrypt based coin.

Take note that if you mine using a CPU, your resources will be reduced and there will be extra heat and electricity fees

I'm a computer science student and have been linux user for years, so it was quite easy for me personally. If you're not used to it it can be a little tougher, but once you are comfortable with using only the command line, it should be quite straightforward.
Also, there's a lot of good and detailed guides out there. Good luck : )

I ran cgminer on a nvidia card last week and the payout after 30 hours was like 0.00004 btc or something like that.
You would probably get more bitcoins if you put a sign and a cup on the sidewalk saying "Give me some money please", and buy bitcoins for the profit.

...or just sell the cup right away

I fully agree, mining Bitcoin doesn't seem like a good option at the moment, and it's mostly ASIC's keeping the hash rate up now. Altcoins are your best bet when using CPU and GPU. I have my old gaming PC setup as a litecoin miner at the moment.
