I have been reading around the internet about ow people's bitcoins are being stolen left and right. I think it has a lot to do with the high influx of new people to bitcoin recently because of all its media attention. What I did was look at different ways to secure your wallet..

Apparently there are apps for this and it can be easy, however this method ENSURES your safety because you do the entire process offline (pass key creation and encryption) and then save your info to a flash drive or wherever you want to store it. The other methods, I believe, run while a network connection is active, which means there is still a possibility of being hacked. This tutorial stops any of that from happening. The only way anyone could EVER get your password is if they literally extorted you for it.

Yes, it is long. Highly effective though. Hope you found this information useful. Here: http://robotmoola.com/cold-storing-bitcoin/

I would also hence people using Zonealarm Firewall for own purposes when keyloggers cannot actually get into that system, sending out information from your computer isn't then possible. Only if you enable output of an specific program that keeps the look after stored information.

What I did was to format an old computer.
Copy the sourcecode for bitadress
Put on usb stick.
Open the bitadress website on my newly formated computer, without a networkcard in it.
Create wallets.

Save private key on two separate usb sticks aswell and printing it out on paper.
Then put my public key back on the first usb stick and sendt money to them.

As far as I know, noone can find my private keys.
When I want to make a transaction I add the private key to blockchain, do the transfer, and make a new wallet where I send the remaining funds.

Atleast im safe, I guess

Another good way to keep your wallet phyiscally safe is to print the private addresses out as QR codes, so you can scan them in again should you ever have your storage method (hard drive, USB memory stick) die on you. Could also back your wallet up on CD-R for digital access. This wont stop hackers of course, but should still give piece of mind.

i've yet to see a good for-newbs tutorial on how to store an offline wallet.. maybe i should do it.

This tutorial LITERALLY spoonfeed this information to the reader well enough that my four year old could do it. Its just a long process when you dont understand some things. Thats why it guides you the ENTIRE way. There is no better method. This one works bar none. It is uncontested. The only way someone could get your password with this method is if you PHYSICALLY gave it to them.

Whats so hard to understand about it?

A paper wallet is a way to store Bitcoins that involves printing the Bitcoin addresses and private keys directly on a piece of paper. When done properly, paper wallets are one of the safest ways possible to store Bitcoins.

- bitcoin wiki

Paper Wallet Advantages
  • Protection from malware and keyloggers.
  • Maintain 100% ownership of your private keys. You own the coins not a 3rd party service.
  • No dependence on the security of any website.
  • Keeping a piece of paper safe is easier than keeping your computer secure.

Paper Wallet Disadvantages
  • The paper contains everything needed to spend the coins and must be kept physically secure.

Install Ubuntu Linux with encrypted user directories onto a large bootable USB stick
Install Bitcoin-QT
Encrypt wallet
Only use this for dealing with Bitcoins
Finally chuck the memory stick in fireproof safe when not in use.
