USB 3.0 + Raspberry Pi

Hello all.  This post is pretty much a repeat of something I posted in the newbie forum, but now, for some reason, I have access here :


I have some USB 3.0 hubs (Anker) which are running great and I have a Block Erupter mining setup which runs fine.  I'd like to attach these to my Raspberry Pi.  I've read that Raspberry Pis don't support USB 3.0, but I have seen people who have pictures which suggest they got it to work and I have seen a few people seeing USB 3.0 hubs, block erupters and a Raspberry Pi, suggesting that they too have gotten it to work.  Obviously, I don't need the USB 3.0 speed or features.

USB 3.0 is compatibel with USB 2.0 and conversely! But when you use a Raspberry Pi you should power the USB Hub with an external power supply!

My hub is definitely powered.  It's a fancy Anker hub, 5 amps.  I've read that raspberry pi can't handle USB 3.0, but I would have expected a USB 3.0 hub to just perform at 2.0 speeds or even 1.1 speeds when connected to a raspberry pi.  I am no expert on USB or raspberry pis, however.

think someone did mention plug a usb2 hub in your pi then connect the usb3 to the usb2 hub but i was never able to get it to work

its not the fact its usb 3 its the fact the pi and pi software dont have the drivers to detect the usb 3 control chip

Thanks for the explanation.

I can confirm this with my own experience.  I tried using a ORICO 10-Port Aluminium USB3.0 Powered Hub with my Raspberry Pi, and it just won't recognise it: no matter whether the USB 3 hub is plugged directly into the RPi, or if the USB 3 hub is plugged into a USB 2 hub connected to the RPi.

I think he is not looking for a driver to run the erupters - he needs a driver für the USB 3.0 hub.

I have a Anker USB 3.0 hub running on windows whitout any problems, but it doesn't work with my RPi....

Any ideas?

I have been unable to get USB3 support on my pi at all. I tried a few of the usual flavors of pi-compatible linux, as well as minepeon. All the devices are recognized directly, but when plugged in to the hub they do not show at all (this goes for asics and various usb devices). I eventually Just broke down and got a usb2 hub which works wonderful.

The Pi does not support usb 3.0 period.  Barely supports usb 2.0.  Read about it at the Pi foundation web site, been a topic of discussion since the first Pi came out.

I know a few have been able to get a 3.0 hub to work sorta, I wouldn't waste my time when 2.0 is plug and play and generally a less expensive hub.  I started with a few 7 port d-links but have all 10 port rosewill's now, they run 8 sticks without problems with the supplied psu (wall wart).  You can use a pc psu's 5v rail to power the hubs if you can diy the connections.  5 volt power supplies are cheap on evilbay, about 40 bucks for a 30 amp psu, add your own connectors.
