https://bitstamp.btc / bitstamp.btc
https://coinbase.btc / coinbase.btc

You don't "petition", you pay ICANN $185,000 to apply ...

But sadly the new gTLD expansion program ship has sailed already, about 1200 new TLDs applied for, .btc not one of them.

It will be several years before another expansion happens, some say this will be the one and only ......

iTs a nice idea, but in all likely hood the symbol for Bitcoin will be XBT so in the long run BTC might be a bit antiquated.

more or less retired.

Agreed.

And speaking of domain names, I expect to see a lot more xbt*.com being registered soon, to compliment or displace the btc*.com variety.

It is being worked on by a lot of developers right now, including additional projects (see my sig for my own, but also lots of others).  You can already browse .bit with a Firefox extension, that is even capable of verifying TLS certificates without relying on the CA architecture ... and other things.

Use your Namecoin identity as OpenID: https://nameid.org/

I like BTC much better than XBT, but I don't think either are better than .com
