I thought it didn't offer encryption and somewhere on the site it advised to use true crypt.  But when I downloaded the software, it said I can choose a passphrase for the wallet.

Yes the 'Add password' is actually encrypting your private keys.

It uses scrypt and then 256 bit AES to do the encryption.
