Cryptocurrencies are a hot new presently, all thanks to the roller coaster ride that Bitcoin witnessed in the course of a few months, rising from $1,000 to $6,000 by mid-November in 2017 to skyrocketing to $19,500 in the December of the same year. The currency has fallen down back to $6,000. For the shipping industry, a currency that fluctuates so dynamically cannot work well for day to day transactions. Moreover, several governments and banks have put restrictions on dealing with the cryptocurrency.

But a new cryptocurrency may be apt for the shipping industry. This is the 300Cubits project that was launched in January this year by two businessmen based in Hong Kong. The company has developed the TEU tokens, aiming to find a solution to the issue of overbooking by container line operators and no-shows by shippers; such issues translate to losses of around $23 bn every year.

300cubits, a Hong Kong-based firm focusing on developing Ethereum blockchain for shipping, has announced that a successful trial shipment has taken place using its smart contract technology.
On March 15, 2018, TEU tokens held as booking deposit on blockchain returned to the users upon receipt of port EDI message on a textile shipment.

The shipment consists of two 40-foot high cube container boxes going from Malaysia to Brazil.

On Sunday, Hong Kong-based tech firm 300cubits announced that it has facilitated the first trial shipment of containerized cargo using its "TEU" cryptocurrency token booking deposits. Brazilian textile importer LPR used "TEU" tokens to book space for two 40-foot high cube boxes on a vessel operated by Malaysian liner West Port.

“It was a pleasure to be the first in the world to participate in this trial, for a technology that will change the way ocean shipments are done around the world,” said Felipe Bittencourt, CEO of LPR.

The shipment booking was confirmed on March 8, booking deposits in TEU tokens were placed by both the shipper and the liner on March 9 and returned on March 15 upon successful completion of shipment loading. The TEU tokens are  digital shipping booking deposits, and 300cubits says that they can solve the no-show and rolling problems that cause billions of dollars in inefficiencies in the container shipping industry each year. The principle is simple: both the liner and the shipper agree to a deposit amount in units of "TEU" tokens; both make a deposit; and if one party doesn't fulfill the contract, the other party receives all the deposited tokens. If everything goes to plan and the box goes onto the ship, both parties get their deposit back. These "TEU" transactions are conducted on the Etherium blockchain platform, and can be viewed by the public in the Etherscan portal, creating transparency.

Latest about Booking Deposit Module
After several weeks of UAT (user acceptance tests) and some adjustments to our smart contract to reduce mining costs on the Ethereum blockchain, our Booking Deposit Module commence operation on 24th July.
 
The first shipment through our production system was a 20'dry container from Mitsui Chemical on a MCC Transport operated vessel from Singapore to Keelung. The shipper submitted booking deposit in TEU tokens on 24th July and the carrier quickly responded by putting up an equal amount of TEU tokens on the very same day. The shipment was gated in on 25th July and then loaded on 26th July, all in accordance with the booking plan. "We welcome solutions such as the one provided by 300cubits that help reduce No Show and Rolling, which, in our view, are some of the main pain points hurting both our customers and our own operation. We would like to see more shippers providing financial commitment at the booking stage. In return, we will provide equal commitment to ensure these shippers that their shipments will be loaded according to their bookings." said Naresh Potty, Chief Commercial Officer of MCC. Mitsui Chemical is a leading chemical material and product manufacturer while MCC Transport is a regional specialist handling all Intra-Asia containerised cargo for the Maersk group.
 
27 TEU in shipment volume has been put in our Booking Deposit Module during the first two weeks of operation.
 
At the moment, each participating liner has been paired up with couple shippers of their choice to work in their respective pilot program. We will include more of the long list of shippers already signed up for our solution and sign up more shippers who still have not signed up.
 
Most of our industry contacts suggest that the shipment volume this year has not been strong despite we are already in the traditional peak season. However, the carriers' capacity withdrawal has created some space tightness that is sufficient to make the shippers worry. Our solution helps both the shippers and carriers to secure their bookings according to their existing contract rates while not adding any working capital burden on either party.
