Both ETH and bitcoins are good. ETH is not a just another cryptocurrency, it is fuel for Etherium(ERC20 token) platform. When the increase of the ERC20 token, that means ETH price is also automatically going up. Bitcoin has the very limited amount of coin, that also makes price increment. I suggest to 30% ETH ,30% bitcoin and 40 Alts coin.

Well if you are interested in altcoins than ETH should be your first choice of an altcoin to buy into. Also rememeber to not limit yourself, there is no law that says that you have to invest in a single altcoin, look into other coins, research them and invest in them.
