Why People Are Using Subdermal Microchip Wallets

Dutchman Martijn Wismeijer is very cautious when it comes to storing Bitcoin – so much so that in 2014, he had two NFC (near field communication) chips surgically implanted into each hand to store his encrypted Bitcoin keys.

Wismeijer stated a number of reasons for the drastic method of storing crypto, saying he had lost the majority of his Bitcoin over the years to exchange failure, hacking, and theft.

“I can safely say most of the bitcoin, more than 80 percent, I have lost due to hacks, thefts, exchanges gone bad and other problems. If I would’ve had the chip in 2010, I’d probably be a rich man by now.”

However, Wismeijer was also simply curious about the idea of storing his digital currency in his skin, telling IBTimes “I did it because I wanted to experiment with strong bitcoins using subdermal implants because that’s what I thought would be the Holy Grail of contactless payments.”

He had the procedure done at a body piercing studio, which he recommends to anyone wishing to have the procedure done. The chips are manufactured from glass and measure 2mm x 12mm end to end, the size of a small grain of rice. Wismeijer said the process was less painful than an IV drip injection, and pointed out that the procedure is commonly carried out on household pets with no issues.

What did u think the advantage and disadvatage of  implanting micro chip wallet under our skin body.

I think that is just too much. Going too far. Not easy to manage and not needed. There are many ways to secure your bitcoin and altcoins, hardware wallets in my opinion do work well enough provided you take care of your recovery phrase, and store them offline in secure locations. I have found that people do lose access to their coins out of their own negligence.

This is a great solution to avoid hackers attacking his crypto amounts, but it's a stupid choice when he turns himself into a mobile safe, and he becomes a hack. They will try to find and can kidnap him to get the private key.

Actually it's a very good idea although it looks very extreme, but I really like it that way, and it's very good at securing the bitcoin we have.

i'm sorry but this is very dumb!
he lost his coins because he was an idiot otherwise we are all owning some amount of bitcoin and we are not getting hacked because we simply learned the first step which is securing our wallets.

not to mention that implanting yourself with a chip that has your funds in it means you will always have your money with you. this may sound like a neat thing but it is also a dangerous thing! imagine a gun to your head telling you to give the theif all your money, if you have 100 bucks on you, you will lose 100 bucks but if you have all your funds like 100BTC on you you will lose 100BTC!

Weak hands have been complaining about missing out ever since bitcoin was $1 and never buy the dip.

this is one of those technologies that are mostly interesting instead of being practical. at least not today, this technology is not at a point where it becomes easy to use and becomes popular. you spend a lot of money to do something like that while risking of having an external object inside of your body. and unless you are one of those people (like a businessman) who constantly moves around the world, you don't need such technologies and you don't need to have your bitcoin wallet inside of you at all times.

It looks like a good idea, until someone figures out how to detect these NFC chips and locate them in the body and just follow these people, and hit them over the head and surgically extract the chips. The idea of inserting a foreign object under my skin, send shivers down my spine and I do not know if somewhere in the future, someone might attribute this to some kind of sickness or cancer of the skin. <No long term studies has proven that this is safe>

This is an intriguung technology but I do not know if i want something implanted in my body. Also how safe it will be, who will have access on this microchip. How hack proof it is. There will be a lot of question in my mind. Unless they prove that it is safe, i will still prefer the old way on storing bitcoin.

Yes, I think it is not safe for us to plant a microchip on our body because we may infect on this for possible happen that may turn to skin deceased. However, this is good for those who have a huge amount of bitcoin, through this you are fewer worries with your bitcoin balance for a possible steal. Let see and wait for further updates of this kind of wallet, in a positive way that it is good for storing it is 100% sure safe.

IMO this method of storing bitcoin needs further research about it's effects on the human body since it might harm the human body as well which ain't good for a bitcoin holder. I think it is a lot safer to store bitcoins on a ledger nano S wallet or in trezor rather than having your wallet injected under your skin. It might cause a disease or malfunction to the human body in the long run, and I encourage all future researchers to make this a topic of your research paper.

i think this too extreme . it will be harmful . bitcoin of the private key just a string of characters . it can be written is the paper , hackers no awy to steal . it can slso be stored in cold purse , no network , it is safe .

They created Facebook to get us to voluntarily give up our PI.

They created smart phone fingerprint readers to get us to voluntarily give up our biometric data.

Now it turns out they'll be able to get us to chip ourselves too.

Pretty neat.

also, I find this lot of work buy yeah if you have quite a heavy bag of bitcoins then you can go through this process.

Not a good idea for me since this implant is not design for longer period in your body and this may cause some other contributing factors that may result to infection on the body. I think there are other ways that need to be develop but not this microchips that will be inserted on the body  which I think not acceptable to humanity.

I think it will still be difficult to implement, because if this is to be realized then the first thing to do is bitcoin has been recognized into the world currency, but in fact now bitcoin is still banned in various countries, and there should be institutions or governments that can regulate bitcoin

As he said, maybe it's a great way to make contactless payments. It's kinda cool too, bring nothing but your body, just hovering your hand above the scanner and voila! Super awesome.

But if the reason is security, then I think it's a bad idea. The solution to hacking, exchangers fault, theft is not implementing your keys under the skin. That would just make it worse. You should store the keys safely where people could not find them. Limiting access to the keys is the main part of the security.

So, as a everyday means of payment, it would be great, but as a long term and secure wallet, big no.

People have different opinion about this. It is true that it is interesting to have a secured chip where your cryptocurrencies can be stored and implanting it to your body, but the question is, is it safe to have that chip in your body for a very long time, because it can also harm you. Yeah it is safe from theft if that is injected in your body because no one will know that you have it there, but what if some bad people discovered that you are hiding it in your body, it can also be a threat to your life. I'd still go for hardware wallets and hide it on a safe place.

I think that he had over reacted in the matter of storing bitcoins. Its always advisable not to store bitcoins in any of the exchanges.Instead,he could have used  hardware wallet like ledger nano S or trezor for storing his bitcoins safely.

If any one knows that bitcoin has been stored in micro chips under the skin, then his life might be at serious risk as the bitcoin stealers would be willing to do any thing for obtaining bitcoins and and they would even cross any limits.

I really think that this is the dumbest thing to do, i am sure that he has done this for being the first human to do so, if not he would not have advertised like he did, now robbers will be easy to identify him and anything can happen to his hand right now, i would not do any of these stunts but there are simple ways to store your coins securely and the most important thing is not to advertise that you are into bitcoin and brag about your coins.

This is actually dumb. I cannot believe someone will actually want their own wallet store in their own body just so they can say that it is "safe." There are other ways on keeping your wallet safe without going too extreme. Moreover, is it safe to have that inside a human body? I am quite familiar with the science of the human body and I know that when the body is not accustomed to a foreign object, it starts to reject it, which may cause the person harm. Furthermore, human body undergoes different changes, especially since we grow into old age, so I think it will be quite difficult to truly understand the concept of this chip and the human body. I, for one thing, will not agree to have  that in me.
