Alright, that's why the competition of altcoin is about who is living in the future and which is not. The development progress become the main concern on this stage and how the majority of failed altcoin has ended with no development result at all. This is the disadvantage of the altcoin itself.

For me the only disadvantage for altcoins are the risk. For a lot of altcoins and their projects its very hard to get some attention. I saw a lot of good project who failed because they just put to less work in the marketing campaign. So with altcoin you just have more risk to loose. But if they gain value, you will make a much better profit!

Most of the altcoins can be manipulated easily and it's been used by the so called whales to to earn big profits at the expense of small traders and newbies. Another disadvantage of the altcoins is it seems to follows the price of bitcoin resulting in the market downtrend. I feel that the biggest drawback of altcoins is the high possibility of their creators scamming people in clever ways which is not the same with Bitcoin. Popular altcoins like Ethereum, Ripple etc have already established themselves are completely legit, but there are cases of popular altcoins scamming people like Bitconnect etc which is a shame. This is why I always suggest diversifying your funds whenever possible to minimize the chances of getting scammed.

As per observation, one of the disadvantages of altcoin is that during the ICO sale, price value is still fine but once it was on the exchange sites, the tendency is that the value will drop from the previous price where it will took a very long time for it to recover and for some, it hasn't get back and continues to drop.

There are many I want to address but the disadvatage of the altcoin in general is there's too many of it, I think there should be a proper screening first or an evaluation before launching a coin, so that scam coins will be reduced too.
