Your wallet security is as good as your computer security.

If you get infected with a virus, your wallet will get comprised. If you store your wallet file/private-key in the cloud and someone gets access to your account, your wallet will get compromised. It's simple as that.

Having a cold storage wallet means that there is no way someone can get access to your wallet without physical access. And that's why cold storage is waaay more secure than a hot wallet.

Hardware wallets aren't necessary but they are worth it. Cold storage is undeniably the best method for securing your coins because you limit the risks down from third parties to just you. Sure, anything can be hacked but hardware wallets are designed to keep your keys safe even when connected to a compromised computer. There are certainly worse options than MEW in terms of security and you'll probably be just fine using it. Down the line, however, a hardware wallet wouldn't be a bad investment. You could use both wallets, MEW centered for more immediate liquidity purposes while your hardware wallet stores the majority of your coins offline. Something to consider!

Cheers!

Hello! You know, an antivirus program is worthless especially free-type ones. When it comes to cryptocurrencies, I advise you to use a Trezor or a Nano S Ledger. Is the best way to secure your money.Hope I could be helpful to you.Wish u best of luck!

Recently we had some guys playing with DNS and thus compromising MEW, which comes down to being really safe you want to download the open source code from github and then run it locally as this simple thing can prevent if in the future some DNS gets compromised.

Some Dekstop Anti Virus can't detect Phishing websites as their main purpose it to protect your PC system and not your browsing experiences. But fortunately, there are browsers that contains built-in Phishing and Malware Protection such Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome so I suggest to only used this browsers to accessed your MyEtherWallet.

But it doesn't mean you are 100% safe because even how well protected your system is, if your actions is not responsible then you might be fall on a trap like accidentally sharing your private keys online or any relating to that.

Cold Wallet is not necessary at least in my own view but if you intend to hold long as in untouchable then I suggest to just buy hardware wallets like Trezor and Ledger. We don't need to be exaggerated in terms of the security on our own MEW as long as we know some basic safety precautions and knowledge about it.
