I forego books in lieu of threads like this.
I heat my apartment with cardboard left for recycling at a nearby store. And my rig. Last two winters I went as low as -5C in my room. I've constructed a "tent" inside my apartment to minimize the volume I have to heat up.
I would appreciate detailed reports and photographs.
I'm so cheap I don't have a digital camera (despite working in a photo store).
Cardboard gives out same amount of heat energy (per kg burned) as your usual wood. Only problem is increased ash output and the fact that cardboard is less dense, and so requires more storage volume. I thought of this possibility last year, kinda too late (january). It's 200 meters from my home, I usually take a big bag and make 2-3 walks to the container. But in this season I've decided to simply push whole container along the road to my home, at night. After emptying it I pushed it back to the store.
Also I'm so cheap that I had my fridge turned off for the most off the cold season (I had -5 to +5 outside my enclosed space, enough to cold store stuff).
Also I've slept in a sleeping bag to conserve fuel.
Urban survival, fuck yeah.
