Edit 19/04/2018:

TheQuin asked if I could breakdown the data further, to allow us to see even deeper into how each one of us is in relation to next rank's objectives. Since both Activity and Merit are required, graphs need to consider both variables.

I've appended the charts to the original post, at the end of this post (section number 5).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This past weekend, I managed to reach a goal I had set out to surpass, which is that of reaching the 100 Merit barrier ( Smiley) in a reasonable time, if possible before my activity caught up with the merit counter. I was fortunate enough to reach it just after two and a half months. Not bad, but certainly not effortless, and it does come at a cost in personal time.
I thought I’d cool down a bit now, since my initial goal was reached, but then I started to see questions asked throughout the forum that I could try to help resolve. The latest that got me going was one related to rank scaling and merit. It got me wondering just how many people were on their way to rank up, but had not been able to do so yet due to either a lack of merit or activity.

I’m not saying that the resulting numbers are good or bad, since that depends on overall forum objectives that consider quality of posts and content, spam reduction and reduction of account farming as the core aims, and have as a side effect a deceleration of ranking up. Besides, these numbers should ideally be compared to past data so see impact on ranking evolution.

To cut a long story short, here are my findings:

1. Introduction:

The universe of analysis is that of users that have received at least 1 Smerit up to the 13/04/2018 (latest merit.txt file). I've considered the natural ranks only, and amongst those, the ones that require Merit.
Any user that has not received sMerit I have not considered, basically because I'd take a trillion days to get all their data. If you come to think of it, non-sMerited users have not managed (yet) to move a single step towards ranking up, so they have a long road ahead and are not in the Rank pipeline, at least not from a minimal dynamic point of view.

From the summary, which is broken-down further down, we can see that:

* 48,78% of users are in need of sMerit to rank up to the next level (since the Activity level for the next level has been reached).
* 1,94%   of users have reached the next level in terms of Merit, but not Activity. This small select group need only post enough days to rank up.
* 48,15% of users need both Merit and Activity to rank up.
* 1,12% are what I think, are being considered for legendary as we'll see below.

So in summary, nearly half of the users are ready to rank up but need to work on getting Merit. Therefore Merit takes it's toll, but it's there for a reason and those are the rules of the game now. Figure is rather high though objectively ...

2. Breakdown by Rank:

Here's the breakdown by Rank. Each graph shows how many users ar waiting to rank up to the next level, and the motive.

In the Heros to Legendary chart, I've created a category called "0. Being considered for Legendary". It represent those that have already got at least 1.000 Merit and at least 775 Activity (the range is formally 775-1030, but I'm considering the minimum for this excercise). The specific change of rank does not seem automatic, so I guess they have to be veted one by one.
Heros I think started off with a 500 Merit airdrop. Nevertheless, there are quite a few that seem to have received 1.000 merit, probably because they are virtual Legends and are probably in consideration.

I've created an overall category called "3. Soon may rank up to xxxxxxx" where xxxxx is the goal Rank. This category includes those users that are within 20% of the Merit requirement and at the same time, within 20% of the Activity requirement. That leaves "4. Not enough activity nor Merit to rank up to xxxxxxxx" for those outside the 20% window on both accounts.

3. Who has got enough merit, but lacks activity?:

These are on the fast track to ranking up. I've ordered the list by Rank and then by Merit /Posts.

There are some strange cases though if you study the profiles. I looked through the Member segment one by one:

* pafu -> Being a Member, started off with a 500 Merit airdrop instead of 10 (could be a bought account, but I thought there were no demotions..). -> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=25731
* Technor -> Being a Member, started off with a 100 Merit airdrop instead of 10. ->https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1134109
* Husna QA -> Looks Ok. -> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1827294
* kaar -> Looks Ok. -> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1439008

5. Breakdown by Rank, Activity and Merit:

A breakdown by activity and rank allows us to see even deeper into how each one of us is in relation to next rank's objectives. Since both Activity and Merit are required, what If done is break down each of these variables into set of 20% (% of variable objective completed), with a >100% group as well (over the limit).

Green: Could Rank Up but lacks activity or is under consideration (Legendaries only).
Red:    Could have ranked up, but lacks merit.
Blue:   Lacks both activity and merit (each group tells us how much the users have moved towards the goals).

Examples of interpretation:

* Let's say a user has only reached 22% of Activity required by his next rank level, and 14% of Merit, he would be on the A: [20%..40%) M: (0%..20%) segment, being far away on both objectives.

* If a user has reached 82% of Activity required by his next rank level, and 74% of Merit, he would be on the A: [80%..100%) M: (60%..80%) segment.

Regardless of activity, most Heros have way to go on Merit since they are on the [40%-60%) segment of the Merit required by Legendary rank.

Most Sr Member have way to go on Merit since they are on the [40%-60%) ; less than half of these are within 20% of activity goal as well.

Yes again the mayority is on the  [40%-60%) merit segment, with more than 75% being near the Activity goal.
The above cases are likely to be in the [40%-60%) merit segment with a large contribution from initial merit airdrop.

Things change radically here, since the initial airdrop of merit is proportionally further away from next rank's goal requirements (10 fold vs 2-2,5 fold in higher ranks). Mayority is in the lower merit band (0%..20%).

Distribution in terms of merit follows a pyramid shape based on metir, and repeats the pattern on each activity block.

I am so glad to see actual analysis starting up in a couple of threads.

This reminds me of a Kaggle contest which tried to model and detect situations which would trigger an altruistic response when forum members are asked to purchase a pizza for someone.  This was the purpose of the random acts of pizza subreddit.

The interesting, and somewhat relevant part, was that we were able to use machine learning along with keyword analysis to identify key features of granted versus rejected requests.  It was not surprising that the ones which were rejected had a higher frequency of 'I'/'my'/etc keywords rather than 'we'/'us'/etc.  The guys who held the contest ended up identifying a number of features that helped them model altruistic responses.

I started the 'bitcointalk visualization project' awhile back but was plucked up by Oyster to develop before I got too far.  I can't wait to collect and then analyze posts which received merit versus posts which did not.  One interesting thing I hope to find is that there will be clusters forming for legitimately gained merit versus farmed versus posts which received no merit - and that we can build a model which will let us guess which are which.

I am back though!

Awesome work, as usual.
So the merit system is really working on stopping non-deserving users to rank-up, but also is showing how it can be corrupted by so many users.
Once detected, what is the path to follow? I mean: when you detect this kind of users, earning merit in such an improbable-fair way, what do you do? Do you report them?
One of my deepest concern regarding the rank system is the spamming: we all have seen how many users are selling merits as a new kind of scam, as well as accounts. On the other hand, we have many users farming alt accounts in order to rank up their alt and join many signatures or be able to scam more users.

Have you thought about a new statistical insight into this misuse? I mean: Can you make another thread (I know you are already tired, but your work is so amazing I'm afraid you are going to have many request Tongue), regarding how many users are scamming the merit system?
And, besides, as you said, a comparison between the ranking activity before and after the merit system?

Sorry for asking you to work even more harder. But I truly admire your work jejee.  Grin

<...>

Thanks seoincorporation. Truth is, I need a bit of a break now to recover energy..

Regarding the nº of users scamming the merit system, I guess we could agree on various methods taking place:
a)   Transfer of sMerit between main/alt accounts
b)   Swapping sMerit (on purpose)
c)   Purchasing sMerit of others

They all end up in the Forum logs and are there for everyone’s “view”. The problem is discerning proper sMerit awarding from the above. Since awarding is by nature subjective and not subject to proof of work (pun), it needs a human viewer to check suspect cases one by one.
What can be done is, apart from current manual reporting, try to device lists of suspect cases pulled up from data aggregation.

I gave it a go a month ago (see https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3167331.0). That is a tough post to read, but to cut a long story short, the idea was to try to find circular merit; that is, users that award merit and get it back in return. Now this up to a certain point is logical, since sets of users like other people’s posts and vice-versa. I have a couple of such in my merit history.

It´s when the quantity gets high in these circular transactions that we can say we have detected a “suspect”. Now depending on the amount of sMerit given/received and/or number of times, we can filter the list and work on it (alas) one by one, to see if cases “a” and “b” can be detected (case type “c” is much more difficult since I doubt it will lead to a circular swap of sMerit).

For example, the tab labelled “Given Received Merit I” referred to in the above referenced thread, has at the top of the list (file created a month ago or so ->   https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Su1vulMzsbkYPOsU8llr8PrQXRPvy4oM_E218klwHh8/edit#gid=968451010):
User 377987 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=377987) had given to user 1580039 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1580039) 50 sMerits over in 41 Transactions, but receives none in return.
Not surprisingly, these two accounts came up today on my post as “weird”.
Unfortunately, someone has to grab the list and filter it, to reduce the number of suspect candidates to apply a manual check on one by one check…

On the other topic, to perform a comparison between the ranking system before and not is very difficult: This threads analysis is based on current user profile (of users awarded merit). What is used is a snapshot of some of the fields of user’s profiles, as of yesterday.

To do a comparison, we would need a similar snapshot belonging to some time ago (which we cannot retrieve) and do something similar but only related to activity. With this, we could compare throughput today vs throughput a year ago for example (although circumstances are very different now: many more users on the one side due to recent hype, but a merit system on the other that acts as a deterrent).

Even so, we can see with today’s analysis that all those that could have ranked up and didn’t due to lack of Merit would have ranked up with the old system (48,78%). I think that´s the best we can do for now...

Thanks for your answer, man. Yes, I came into your last month publication (which I haven't seen, unfortunately) and this is truly amazing, yet difficult to understand.
Take a break if you wish, we all will be waiting for you!! Your work is awesome.

I was really looking for a topic like that. Very well explained and with an excellent analysis. This kind of statistic must always be taken into account when radical changes occur in a large group of people like this. Analyzing just based on what each one lives and feels is quite different from analyzing based on numbers.

Given these numbers, it is clear that the funnel created with the addition of Merits is much larger than any other change. And by having turned rank up into something so rare, it's pretty likely we'll see more and more people looking for alternatives outside the rules. I still believe that the best alternative would be to turn sMerit into a hot potato, where it is not good to keep holding it for long. Use in 1 week or it will be redistributed.

I found it interesting to know that I am among the 1146 Full members who could have been ranking up for Sr Members but who have not yet reached the necessary merits. Less than 0.01 achieved. This seems extremely exaggerated.

Yes, I had a similar idea, halfway between a hot potato and a full merit decay (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2818350.msg34762749#msg34762749). The basic idea is to remove stale sMerit from accounts after say 3 months, and move it on to additional merit sources that can distribute it. Easier said than done, since the "after 3 months" would require tying sMerit to a FIFO system.

In relation to your second comment, just to state that the analysis is a measure of the pipeline to the next level. Those that have achieved ranking up (say last week for example) are already in their new baseline and will surely be classified as having insufficient merit and insufficient activity to rank up, but residing on their new level (that's why I think I'm not getting the 0.01 you mention).

Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for the insight. It seemed something rather weird, and now we know we can demoted ourselves by going easy on post deletion.

Well this is a hard and tiring work. I have made some statistic back there when merit is out and it took me some times to finish it and it is just only a small statistic (you can see my created topic), but you, made a great job.  I admire your good work, i hope with more statistic like this, there will be improvement from the forum and most importantly from people who can only whines. Cheers for your merit !

The latest that got me going was one related to rank scaling and merit.
This has been on my TODO for a long time. I'm especially interested in a list of users who ranked up with merit, and a list of users who need activity only to rank up.

Quote
Did you exclude accounts which are Legendary already? Otherwise I count a total of 13807 users that received sMerit.

I thought a Hero member wouldn't be demoted after deleting posts, but apparently it does.
It could be bought accounts: merit is now more valuable than activity, and it cleans up past spam.

Note: sorry about tabulation, can't seem to master it properly on this forum...
Where's nullius in your list? He did rank up already, but has enough merit to rank up twice more once he has enough activity.
I'm surprised only a few higher ranking accounts have earned enough merit in 12 weeks to rank up. At this rate, new Legendary accounts will become very rare in a few months.

So the merit system is really working on stopping non-deserving users to rank-up, but also is showing how it can be corrupted by so many users.
The number of cheaters is currently relatively high, but that will end once they run out of sMerit to sell/trade/give to alts.

I'm not sure of the motivation behind the bounty spammers, but for others the promotion from Hero to Legendary doesn't really make a great deal of difference. I've got more than enough in my signature for my immediate needs. It would be nice to be able to include a small image, but that is not going to happen for reasons that I can understand. I've picked up about 300 merits from board activities that I have enjoyed.I'm sure that if I applied myself the other 200 would be easy to achieve after a bit of research, but I prefer to visit Bitcoin Talk for relaxation, information exchange, and a bit of experimenting with social networking.

Oh! I nearly forgot about the discussions about Bitcoin. Smiley

This has been on my TODO for a long time. I'm especially interested in a list of users who ranked up with merit, and a list of users who need activity only to rank up.

The first list I partially published at the end of this post: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3218442.msg33469339#msg33469339. It is three weeks old though and list is only for top ranks. If you need the complete list I can redo that part an publish it, but somewhere round the end of week.

The second list you're asking about shoud be the one in the scrollable area under the "3. Who has got enough merit, but lacks activity?:" section. It is a complete list.

Yes.I only considered ranks that needed to receive sMerit to rank up, and since Legendaries do not need to rank up, they are left out. Newbies and Jr ranks are also left out since the don't need sMerit to reach the next level. Also Staff, Vip, Donator, Founder, and Moderators are left out. Copper I decided to leave out, since I see their Rank as Copper regardless of Merit and Activity.

In the complete merit file with all awarded sMerit until the 13/04/2018, there are:

Nº of sMerit awarded in a Tx:                   131.060
Nº of distinct users that Sent sMerit:         12.518
Nº of distinct users that Received sMerit:   13.807
-> I only use the subset above stated related to ranks.

Quote
Where's nullius in your list? He did rank up already, but has enough merit to rank up twice more once he has enough activity.
As above stated, I left Copper Members out deliberately.

Quote

That's what I fear too. Also sMerit awarding per Tx is way lower than at the begining. Logical sin brand new toy days are over, but even more difficult to gain a large aggregate of sMerit. This could discourage a fair bit higher ranks since progression is slow (with exceptions).

Yeah, wish bitcoin section was more informative and open to serious stuff though, and less of a spam area for activity. Maybe the technical area would be interesting, but it's probably a bit of a challange to really get into the root of it. I may give a go further down the road.

Great work on compiling some interesting stats. If it's not hard to do can you break down the 48.15% that need both Merit and Activity to rank up into those that have Merit>Activity and Merit<Activty? I think that'll give further insight as to how many are likely rank up any time soon.

I actually thought of doing it, but didn't want to make it too extense. I'll give it a go though in the coming  days since as you say the insight will be interesting. Thanks.

I added some more graphs on the OP with the info you suggested adding. Quite some detail there, and struggle everywhere to get enough merit ..

That's excellent and a lot more detailed than I was expecting. We still have to remember how short a period of time people have had to get the merit compared to how long it takes to get the activity. That's a function of the way everyone got the same initial distribution by their rank ignoring their activity. I'd think that if you compare those numbers in a couple of months time that there will be a big improvement.
