there have been a few web based wallets that have run off with peoples money or just been DDoS'd into the earth

i believe the litecoin Electrum is out of date and no longer being updated

an exchange such as cryptsy, btce or mxcnow may be an option but exchanges are not immune from attack either so the safest method remains the client

Pretty much.
Incoming only though. You can't sign using the address, and you can't send from that address. It'll come out of a random address, so don't try to play any dice games with one.

This is a horrible idea. As we've seen with instawallet, MyBitcoin, inputs.io and a variety of other services...
YOU CANNOT TRUST HOSTED WALLET SERVICES

Unless it's an in-browser managed wallet like blockchain, where the service doesn't get your private keys, then it's not safe.
The next safest place is in an exchange such as BTC-e.
Either way, the Litecoin blockchain is only around 4gb, compared to Bitcoin's 16gb+ blockhain, so you might be best just using the real client.

I agree but I wanted to be able to import keys do what I needed and then just redump back to cold storage.  I guess litecoin isn't there yet.

Anyone with the javascript / other skills necessary to create a blockchain.info-style wallet for litecoin (i.e. client-side javascript), please contact me. I'd seriously like to get this commissioned asap. Thanks.
