I agree with you, actually investing in cryptocurrencies and other Initial Coin Offerings / ICO's is highly risky and speculative. Each individual's situation is unique and has own standard to review altcoins. The white paper should be comprehensive, expertise and experienced team in the industry, excellent sign cryptocurrency is to be listed on an exchange ( FIAT exchange would be great) and a crucial indicator is a community, good project always update their project on their social media. I suggest firstly looking into the team that is the back bone of any project. Then see how far they whent in their promises and work that tells a lot about the projects future succes and the propobility of not failing.
