I am very comfortable with 1.7x release and before, is there any reason to upgrade, where is the change log summary

and why was the .dat format abandoned?

Yeah you should upgrade from such an old version. 1.9.x branch has a few releases now so it's safe.

The changelog is on their github repo:

.dat extension has no real meaning for the wallet files and could lead to confusion.
