https://medium.com/@coinmarketcapped/intro-how-coinmarketcap-cmc-manipulates-the-market-by-showing-fraudulent-information-to-the-c1246a953144

after reading this article i think we as a community need to boycott cmc. they control the narrative for so many coins and the market is totally oblivious. its easy for them to update 'inaccurate information' at a convenient time to boost the marketcap of the coin. this is incredibly sketchy!! they are probably insider trading.

the fact that we all use coinmarketcap as our de facto standard for marketcap metric is not healthy in the market for one organization to hold this much power. what about a blockchain solution for ranking system for all blockchain projects?! see audit of all coins..

there's so many other sites
onchainfx
coinloop
spirai
cryptowatch
even BINANCE has their own repo of marketcaps individually calculated and updated according to their information.

don't even get me started on why we should total supply (not circulating) to calculate marketcap. what do u think? is coinmarketcap legit?

It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.
Advertised sites are not endorsed by the Bitcoin Forum. They may be unsafe, untrustworthy, or illegal in your jurisdiction.

I would have to agree. The fact that they don't take into account coins yet to be introduced into the circulating supply when calculation overall market cap created a really twisted view on the market. Its also very misleading for new retail investors that have yet to do the research into how market cap is calculated. There is something to be said for learning the hard way but I think 'best practices' need to be introduced for the space to grow

Boycott it if you like, it's up to you.  Never used it myself and it escapes me why people put so much stock in a coin's market cap.  Even in the stock market it's a metric that doesn't get obsessed over like crypto people do.  For any given coin it's a value that's going to change wildly with price.

The price of a coin, in my opinion, is all you need to know about any crypto.  The price reflects demand, and the only thing that moves a coin price is supply and demand.

If the allegation is that coinmarketcap is manipulating data (or even markets), make a formal scam accusation.  This would not be shocking, though.

There is no valid reason you guys are saying here to boycott the CMC. From the starting time to now. No one reason or problem has been done with any people. I do not know these shared websites are legit or not.
But I believe this website is always for any new cryptocurrency investors.
People really wanna use the best site find the top cois in the market. Except this nothing works better mate.

I didn't see the site performing below standard. Except for few things which are almost same in other sites.

I would have to agree. The fact that they don't take into account coins yet to be introduced into the circulating supply.

I just hope that this is possible, if that could be done so monitoring of coin before they enter cmc will be nice.

I dont know whats on their minds and what they are trying to prove or fight on here about CMC. It might have some issues but not generally a big thing just on my part.I dont know for others but those are just on minimal. CMC would still remain on its spot on where it is commonly used as it should be.If you dont like to use CMC anymore due to such issue you can leave anytime yet there are alternatives in the market which do have similar function.

I did not read the article you have posted, can you please give a more detailed overview about what you are saying here? I regularly take a look at coinmarketcap to see the prices, but do not read any articles there, so I do not know how they influence the prices. They might have some insider knowledge if they receive secret infomation about altcoin projects and can make usage of it, but yu see the prices live and can instantly act.

This is nothing more than a smear campaign from Coinmarketcap's competitors until there proof that those accusations have happened or are happening. Why dont the accusers declare their identities in public and own up to the libel charges if they are proven wrong.

CMC seems to do quite some shady stuff.
I, for my part, already have stopped using CMC completely due to the accusations and wrong and incomplet price/supply information.

Indeed, very shady behaviour on the part of CoinMarketCap as they show no sign of stopping even after being called out multiple times. No wonder there is a substantial difference while comparing its stats to websites like CryptowWatch and CoinLoop. This should be brought to attention of the public and a PSA would be the perfect way to go around it.

I don't think that they did it on purpose, it's their system that is too hold to handle this highly manipulated markets and it's just let them enter the average price.
I would avoid using their api in any mean anyways, because it's completely unstable, but for personal use it can't make a lot of damage.
Personally I am using CryptoCompare because the UI is much better for long run looking, but I am not mad at coinmarketcap or something like that. If you don't like it don't use it.

i would suggest reading the article... it provides extensive evidence about coinmarketcap manipulating perception of coins by refusing to update or deliberately listing inaccurate info regarding supply or project links...

there is no reason for me to slander coinmarketcap, i just believe as a community we put too much stock in their information and take it as god's word that it is true.

Guess you have to take all information you read with a grain of salt. Data can always be manipulated by anyone.

The only problem I have with coinmarketcap is that they sometimes show old price for some exchanges - if you click the Markets tab you get the list of exchanges offering trading pairs with desired altcoin. And sometimes those prices are not completely fresh so when you check the actual price on exchange, there is different price than it was shown on coinmarketcap.

This is called decentralization in a sense, or democracy of choice. Boycott coinmarketcap is not necessary as long as many other sources as you mentioned and even others are taken into account. Bear in mind in China and Russia also people use other sources because of language and location, not everyone is using coinmarketcap as you think and not every traffic is counted in the internet spaces we are accustomed to.

I'm not sure about that. It depends on the decision of each person. Although CMC has a lot of leaks and rumors about issues related to "virtual price". However, for me, it is still a daily routine to track and care about market volatility with clean charts. You can "boycott" the CMC if you feel it is necessary but it will still be an important element for many in the crypto community.

Coinmarketcap was the first platform that brought so easily many new members of the crypto community. Bitcoin Forum is not a forum in which, even democratically can the majority impose their will on something. I see BTT more the most accurate and neutral foundation over cryptoworld. In a way, the Switzerland of the cryptoworld Smiley

Bitcointalk forum where comes to the discussion while taking about coinmarketcap mate. Both are different varient one, you cannot compare this both in one platform mode. I do not think you need to against the CMC.
It is most helpful platform for the traders and normal crypto holders.
If you want to analyze your crypto currency value and keep using CMC nothing can work like this one.

I agree with you, who wish to boycott cmc can do it, but that's not some big deal if you ask me. Maybe cmc have some role to some people, but I use it just for informations and mostly for new coins to see on which markets I can find that coin and pairs, I check prices but I trust more in prices on exchanges I use. Who trade actively on more sites knows that prices aren't same everywhere, so checking prices is better to do directly on places where you trading.
I will continue to use cmc when I need it, why not. Maybe they are manipulate with some info, but I don't care, until now with coins I trade I didn't notice nothing, prices were always similar. I have read on some places about what they did and as I understood they will fix that "mistakes" they have been made, we will see.

If you are not satisfied with one exchange or any site, then you might just need to look for another, since it's there site not ours we only use theirs, so it is like a bus, if you don't want the bus no. 1-5 then wait for 6-10 if this meet your satisfactory,, or create your own!! Shocked Shocked Shocked Just kidding, look for another sites and don't use their service, that's all. Easy Life.
