Where does this list come from? Are the amounts verified or are they just people claiming to have that much?

These are people that, at one point, but not necessarily now, had that amount of coin in their possession. I've never really been a fan of these lists because they contain both a voyeuristic aspect and they infer trust when it might not be warranted.

Quote
he's the kind of guy who doesn't want to get caught, everybody is watching those blocks, if spent, his identity will be revealed in no time. He probably bought coins in 15,000 chunks on the early days and living on that instead.

There are ways around this if you trust the right individuals within the Bitcoin community, honestly. Additionally, virgin coin would probably sell at a premium. It's not like people are going to torture trusted members of this community just to find out Satoshi's identity. It'd be really hard to do that and get away with it.

I think you are correct though, it'd just be easier to buy thousands of coin early on and then quit your day job after a few years and act like you were just an "early adopter" like everyone else.

What is the problem of people finding out who Satoshi is?  Did he do something illegal?  I know about the link to DPR, but other than that, why wouldn't he eventually come out?

satoshi's mined coin won't be spent, we can roughly say total supply is 20M.

One day it might be??

Again, I don't get it.  Why do you people keep saying this?  For what reason will 900 million dollars not be spent (today's price).  I just don't get it.

it could easily be spent.. satoshi could just donate it to a libertarian or charitable cause. we'd know who the recipient is, but not the sender's real identity.

think about it: you're satoshi and you're cautious about keeping your privacy.. you know that these BTC are sitting there doing nothing.. and it would be extremely difficult to get those coins out of your pocket, so you'd just donate it.

at least this is what i'd be thinking if i were satoshi.
