Finally got around to exchanging some $ for bitcoins. After the transfer went through on MtGox, I then sent the funds to my bitcoin # on the bitcoin program. That was yesterday and the transfer hasn't yet shown up. Just wondering if it takes a few days or if there's something else I need to do in order to receive the funds I sent myself.

Have you checked your client has already fetched the latest block in the blockchain (down in the right corner, next to connections, it shows "xxx blocks")? Match this with
http://blockexplorer.com/q/getblockcount. If your client displays a number < getblockcount your client is probably still downloading the blockchain. If this number is < getblockcount and not increasing, check if your client is connected right.
