Howdy guys.

I saw a couple posts advertising shells, and people got mad at those people and accused them of taking advantage of people? I dunno.

Anyway, I've been running this little unix community for a couple of years now. It's been a super adhoc thing, unlimited cpu/ram usage and bandwidth but disk space limited to 10GB. We have quite the bustling community on irc (irc.soupwhale.com), but somehow it got pretty infested with 4channers and teenagers and the like, so I'd advise not stopping by irc unless you're comfortable in such an environment.

Anyway! Here's what I offer.

Free accounts:
10GB Disk Quota
Webhosting
rtorrent + selection of pre-installed webinterfaces for all your seedboxing needs
Unlimited Bandwidth
Unlimited CPU and Disk usage

Super special awesome accounts: $4/month (bitcoin preferred)
100GB Disk Quota
Everything else is the same

The servers themselves are real, honest-to-god physical boxes with an intel xeon octo @3.2, 32GB ddr3 ram, a hell of a lot of disk space, etc. No VPSes here.

Anyway, swing by the website (sometimes NSFW, it's user-operated www.soupwhale.com) or stop by IRC, we'll hook you up with an invite key for a free account.

The location of the server means that the only "laws" I enforce are anti-child abuse laws. Seedbox away!

A little too obvious there (brand new account, mentioning a specific topic where the initial post was removed). There were no accusations btw, just some facts.

You forgot to: 1) prove that you are from soupwhale; 2) if you are in fact from there, you are missing working links at that site, like the sign up for premium account, getting started, FAQ, Network, ...; 3) the specs of the machine are not listed there, there is no way we can verify that what you are claiming is even close to the reality.

At $4/month a person can just go and grab some cheap VPS instead of a shell shared by lord knows how many people. You need to go a lot cheaper here, and a lot of basic information is missing.

Edited the front page with a statement that 'johnwittle' on 'bitcointalk.org' is the admin of soupwhale.

The website is a work in progress and, so far, has been entirely designed by the users in a completely anarchical manner (hence the hentai slideshow background on the Network page ugh). I'll probably eventually get around to updating the website, but I don't really care. The server already pays for itself, so it's not like i'm in a huge rush to get more customers. I just thought some people would appreciate the free seedbox (an almost unheard-of service these days), and perhaps a small percentage of those people would want to pay for more space.

Did a quick grab of the latest kernel, it didn't get up to full speed (as you can see, max speed was 12M/s average at 7M/s). That's still damn fast, and obviously for larger files it can get faster.

Soupwhale's running an i7, but as you can see it's almost full. New accounts will probably end up on breadwhale or ricewhale.

Most of those VPS's won't allow torrenting, or maybe they do but they'll kick you off at the first sign of a DMCA. Or maybe they don't have a super friendly IRC with lots of people willing to help you out on your cool linux projects. Or they won't sit down with you for a couple hours, of their own free time, and teach you the basics in a ytalk session.

Also, I don't think you can get a VPS with unlimited bandwidth/cpu/mem usage for free. That's the key word here. I like having people use my service because it makes me feel good to teach people how to use unix, to give them the hosting they need for their projects, to help them get a large buffer on private trackers, etc.

$4/month is more of a donation with perks than a purchase of a service (though, of course, I guarantee the paid service). But only the people who want to use it as a seedbox will be paying for additional space. People who just want to host a website, a streaming radio service, a minecraft server, a mumble/vent server, a garry's mod server, openVPN, some webapp, they get it for free. People who want secure email, hosted by a dude they can call up on the phone if they have a question instead of a multinational corporation, they get it for free. People who want a VPN so they can look at porn at work, they get it for free. If they end up wanting more than 10GB they can pay for the extra space at a pretty reasonable price, while paying for my nicotine addiction.

I'm sorry some of the basic information is missing. I'm a mom&pop shop, just looking to get a couple free packs of cigarettes every once in a while. You're probably right, though. I'll start putting more information on the website when I get a chance.

Indeed Smiley

We're registered with what.cd, btn, ptp, and a couple others (so we don't get in trouble for seeding the same torrent multiple times from one IP address). Gives us some advantages, like content sharing, but shh Smiley
