Why are there 1000+ altcoins? and why do many of them have so much market cap?

Just how much money does the world have to throw around? like who would put money into something like Dogecoin... or better yet some of the most obscurest of altcoins lurking at the bottom of the market cap list?

I would think as we get further ahead into the future all the market cap in the small altcoins would consolidate into most popular top 50 coins
