You can try to check out ubiatar project which already released the platform to the users. But i guess you can try to invest or consider major crypto and then medium crypto just like credit, openplatform, CPC, crypterium and many more.
If you are expecting big gained just like make millions from $1000 and it looks like only a little percentage. At least you can try to get doubled or tripled for your investment.

Maybe aim to turn that 1K into a single btc, then work from there.

As for what coins, look for decent projects with active teams that are still a relatively low marketcap.

Lots of icos are comming. But very few icos have a good future. Here you can get various suggestions, but not a single solution. You can additionally get an ideas from social medias and ico ranking sites. Then you have to do your own research to select icos from those.

I agree about ICO and price after listing - if you want to get longterm profit you don't have to participate in the ICO itself. Still speaking about projects I would recommend trying to find underdogs. For example, you can look at the last listings on Bittrex

Yes many ICOs gives you a great returns, but in most cases this happens after a certain period of time and listings on big exchnages. @HardFireMiner is saying that right after tokensale, when coin hit the first exchange it will dump below ICO price. At least this is true recently, last year things was looking different - lot of new projects was pumping straight after the ICO.

Well no one will tell you that for sure, but look at thous one out, they will sure make *10/*5 by the end of the year, CashBet and Dragon coin, they are both in casino industry and they are very promising with an amazing idea of the project. Cashbet ICO is going and about to finish, they work from 2012 and they sponsor Arsenal.
