I want to upgrade my current version of multibit to the latest. But it seems that when you upgrade, you're really just downloading the whole new program. Does the new program automatically recognize my wallets from the version I have currently installed? Can I simply delete the old version, or do I need to move wallets over? Terrified of deleting coins!

You wallets are stored separately to the MultiBit program.

When you install the new version and start it, it automatically loads your old wallets.
