What do you mean? "what is the deal?" They are simply versions of BTC. Some are useful, most are worthless.

if you look at ltc that were 1.64usd on 21th october and now one month later at price 7.63usd, this looks like a real deal at 4.5x the price in one month. even bitcoin back in 2011 falls from 33usd to 2usd. so i guess ltc is promising alt. coin.

I would agree that none have yet created any change that is groundbreaking. Litecoin's different algorithm doesn't offer any significant benefits so its only real change is the block time, which is kind of irrelevant. However, I do think that we will see some serious contenders in the future, the problem with most alt-coins is that they offer nothing new, and even those that are the most successful haven't really done much to improve on Bitcoin, they just attract miners with outdated equipment.

with the outcome of new asic/fpga developers like sluicebit, alpha-t.net and crypto industries, the alt coins will gain wings. its only the matter of time.

Think of Litecoin as silver and BTC as gold.
If BTC is to succeed, so will the major alt coins as the market for virtual currency increases.

While I see decent amount of merchants accepting BTC, almost none accepting alt coins. This trend will continue I believe
