Wikipedia Warned Writers Owning Cryptocurrency of Conflict of Interest Update

The largest digital multilingual free-content information platform Wikipedia has updated its policy to add digital currency to the section titled conflict of interest. It states that the conflict of interest may arise, among other things, when a crypto trader edits a page devoted to this financial technology.

“Any external relationship — personal, religious, political, academic, legal, or financial (including holding a cryptocurrency) — can trigger a COI. How close the relationship needs to be before it becomes a concern on Wikipedia is governed by common sense. For example, an article about a band should not be written by the band’s manager, and a biography should not be an autobiography or written by the subject’s spouse,” the latest policy update says.

I can see where the issue is, but people should really be smart enough to analyze what they read on a website like Wikipedia, which can be edited by anybody. It is as good as trusting the shill accounts on Bitcointalk. The relative anonymity of WIkipedia editors also makes full disclosure a little bit difficult.

Definitely that. It basically applies to all forms of third party information sources. People should understand that we're living in a time where everyone follows its own route which mostly is a route that puts one party in an advantageous position, but works against the majority of the market. It's great to have these sources providing information, but everything should be taken with two grains of salt, where on top of that people should do their own research. I know it's difficult in current times, but not impossible, especially if you have a decent overall understanding of everything around crypto already. The only user categories that will most likely be affected due to their ignorant nature are newbies and get rich quick clowns.

So long as the information is fact based I don't care who writes it or what the incentive is. It's currently hard to find information on coins that isn't fluff or just baseless marketing. If Wikipedia manages to build a strong base for factual cryptocurrency information it shouldn't pay much attention to who puts the effort into writing it as long as its sourced. I've seen entirely Wikipedia articles removed on the basis that they might be "promotional". Well, so what if they are promotional... Someone abided by your standards to write a highly specialized technical articled sourced from outside sources and you remove it because it's promotional? Some wikipedia editors are just a bit salty about the crypto scene.
