Do I have to wait for the synch to finish before I can begin trading?

Also, can anyone recommend a trading website for anyone living in the United States? I've already found out that the options for purchasing Bitcoin on a few websites are not available in the U.S. and I would hate to run into similar trouble when I have to trade in my Bitcoins for cash.

Are you trying to buy bitcoins or day trade bitcoins (against other cryptocurrencies or fiat currencies)?

Btc-e.com is a great website for trading, but you can't buy bitcoins there from USD from the US.

If you are trading, then there isn't much need for a wallet on your computer.

What are you planning on using that wallet for?

I plan to hold onto some as well as trade.

What's an exchange that offers low fee, low minimum withdrawals for U.S. customers?

You may want to check coinbase.com as well. It looks cool for people in the US although there were a lot of posts complaining recently.

Coinbase is probably the easiest to use for US based bank accounts.  I wouldn't keep more than a coin or 2 on their server for an extended period of time.  It works more like a bank rather than an exchange.  Once you buys coins there you can move them to a popular exchange like BTC-e

If you want send your coins from Bitcoin-qt, wait for sync to finish. It only takes time downloading whole blockchain once

not quite true though. the blockchain is ever-updating. if you were to not turn on your computer for a year, it'd take some time to catch up.

Where do you suggest moving BTC from coinbase to?  Funny, I just posted about coinbase.  They are terrible, speedwise.  Their support is non-existent, and it took over 7 days to clear my transaction even though I used a direct bank transfer.  In the end, I'm glad I used them because the transaction cleared, and at the time volatility was very low.  I'd probably never use them in the current situation as they can always backout of a transaction if it suits them (ie hurts you).

I downloaded the LTC wallet 2 days ago and you don't have to wait until the synch is over to get some coins.

The coins however will not be visible until the synch is over.

you can trade right away but you won't see that you received a payment until the sync is over
