That was made to repel an accusation of unfair launch, any premine or instamine. Again and to be clear - at least for 4 weeks since start there were lots of chances to feel any difficulty you want from 1 to 80000 because difficulty chart was parabolic, the launch was "long" and fair.

Betacoin network overcome this difficult part before 16000 block with dignity and honor, with hashrates even more than 1TH at peaks and about 400GH on average.
