Anyone remembers Stamp Scrip?   Huh
In Austria and Germany it did work well for a while. Exactly until it got declared illegal by the German Ministry of Finance and the National Bank of Austria.

I'd change into a deflationary currency since i think it couldn't be worse than this (will get). So what are the hurdles?

According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)
