Calling it a "mafia" is definitely farfetched.

It's just that on Steemit, unless you have a huge userbase(famous YouTubers and the like) or unless you pay for bot upvotes, it's very unlikely for you to views. Yes, views. Earning upvotes is far harder. I've even seen decent posts with only like 5 views.

It seems to be a new trend for people to consider platforms to be scams or manipulated when they don't understand how they work or thrive, sigh.

The point of these platforms is to earn money from the content you publish, and when there are thousands and thousands of people doing so with that financial incentive in mind, you'll need to put a tremendous amount of effort in making your content stand out. It could be as the poster before mentioned by having a larger following, or some more artificial ways like bots and whatnot. It's like everything in life; no effort = no reward.

You are new and directly expect to make bang, which isn't the right attitude. Invest time to build up a decent follower base, try to use other social media platforms to make yourself be more visible, and more important is to be consistent with your content, and if you are doing things right, you'll get what you want. Don't expect to earn amounts similar to the top earners, but some financial compensation is realistic.

Idea behind steemit is great, but so far many people are simply copying somebody else content and putting it as theirs or you have something like this https://steemit.com/steemit/@themarkymark/steemit-creates-accounts-for-scammers-and-nobody-else. There is some shady things being done for sure. People also turn it as their advatage to earn more such as you can look for bid bots to upvote your post but you have to time everything right and look at others bids so you can end up with profit after circulation. It is hard to get noticed as many people are using such bots and without capital it can be a nightmare. But if you are persistent enough you should succeeded.

Steemit is more like a money making machine as with more steem power you have you can sell your votes to bots, create your own bot or even can "lend" steem power to others and earn good return.

For content you have to be really killing it to get noticed and as 1Referee stated
try to use other social media platforms to make yourself be more visible, and more important is to be consistent with your content, and if you are doing things right, you'll get what you want.

You can see it as mafia or what ever, but you have to think that people are forming the price of steem and so far it seems they are valuing the platform in the good way. If it was really bad platform it's coins wouldn't be worth much

True, which they didnt even realize it yet on how these sites do work and when the sites break their expectations then they would say non-sense things to public.Instead for people to have sympathy with him,he would rather get criticism because of the behavior he had showing on this time. Calling Mafia isnt even considerable at all because Steemit we know is a site which do really pays up on what you post depending on the popularity and there would be always top earners on any site we do engage and as a newbie dont easily try to tied up yourself into those top persons that you can attain easily on the things that they have reached out.

long running thread here - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1558366.0

"Mafia
ˈmafɪə/Submit
noun

an organized international body of criminals, operating originally in Sicily and now especially in Italy and the US and having a complex and ruthless behavioural code.

any organized group of criminals resembling the Mafia in its way of operating.

a group regarded as exerting a hidden sinister influence."

hmm, maybe the final one?

no one's doing anything criminal as far as i can tell. there are no doubt insiders who have milked it for all it's worth. also the guys at the top who make the most have been at it the longest and built the biggest operations.

newcomers may never be able to compete, but they can try with plenty of hard work.

yep. i think that is an absolute certainty. if it's possible, then someone is gonna do it and do it as hard as they can until the money or opportunities run out. they'd be leaving money on the table otherwise and very few people here do that.
