On their website they say there is a fee of 1% on international wires.  I wired $3,000 from my US account.  Got it in BTC-e 3 days later, but only $2831.  That's a 5.6% fee.  Anyone know why they have charged me so much?  I wish their support was better.  anyone have similar issues?

The block chain is the main innovation of Bitcoin. It is the first distributed timestamping system.

Most likely intermediary or correspondent banks that took their cut for forwarding the funds to BTC-e's beneficiary bank.

If their bank is not in the US then most likely they have a US based correspondent for USD deposits. And that bank may send the funds from their to another intermediary depending on how the beneficiary bank structured their network relationships.

Hmm I wonder if they are fixed costs or variable for the most part.  The one wire was $3k.  I wonder if I sent $10k if it would be as large a percentage I lose.

Does anyone have any experience wiring them anything greater than $10k?

I have never dealt with BTC-e and I don't know what bank they bank with but my company does sent hundreds of SWIFT wires per month for varying amounts and while some banks, mainly in the Caribbean or other 'Offshore' Jurisdictions, can charge percentage based fees, banks in most of the world do not.

Cheers,
