So I guess it's discontinued and this kind of defeats the profitability of this exercise?

these are not spot prices, don't confuse people

You have to select Correct linux to see cc2.8xlarge.. try Amazon linux HVM

These ARE the spot prices. Just follow the link.

I've found another problem. If you create a spot request at any price, it's forever either pending-evaluation or pending-fullfilment, but no instance is created. I had 3 in pending-fullfilment for 30 minutes, after that the status changed back to pending-evaluation.

I just spun up a cc2.8xlarge instance (in oregon) to test and it worked fine. So they are still available. Took a minute or so (like always).

Unless they somehow disabled them for the free credit, it should still work. Just make sure you are using linux instances (looks like they are no longer available for windows) and you put in a price *ABOVE* the spot price (you are only charged the spot rate but if you go too close it will never be fulfilled or worse your instances will be terminated). i.e. 0.30 or even 0.350

I see now that there are two types of Amazon Linux AMI (HVM) 2013.09.1. The first type is on the top of the list and these are the new-gen servers.

The old servers are still available if you scroll down.

I've selected Oregon, Compute optimized, cc2.8xlarge:

The current price is displayed as:

us-west-2a   0.253
us-west-2b   0.253
us-west-2c   0.253

I've set the price to 0.31, and shortly after I get:

Your Spot Instance request is now being created.

The status changes after 1 minute to pending-fulfillment, which should mean that I've got a spot, but no instance is created. After 40 minutes of waiting still pending-fulfillment.

So I've created a new request, this time at $1 (for testing). Also pending-fulfillment without instance creation with this request.

If I create a request with the new-gen c3 (expensive) servers, an instance is created 1 minute later.

Never used the Amazon linux Ami (No point, you are not using any of the tools or services they provide). Try using "Ubuntu Server 13.10 for HVM Instances". Perhaps the amazon AMI's have issues or delayed creation.

You only get an instance when the state=active (green) and the status changes to fulfilled. Once that happens it will show up under Instances.

cc2.8xlarge is not possible in combination with Ubuntu Server 13.10.

I get stuck on this step:

Quote
4. Make miner start after reboot...
Quote
sudo crontab -e

Add the following line to crontab:
Quote
@reboot /PATH_to_JHProtominer/jhprotominer -O ypool.net -u username.worker -p password -t 32

They do not run on reboot or startup..... whats going on here?

If I reboot the instance I can clearly see it is not running as a miner

Odd, I just tried it and it worked for me. Are you sure you have selected the HVM version?

I'm wondering that too - probably a dumb question, but how do we keep running these with putty closed? Do we have to have 20 instances open?

If you posted that verbatim it's not going to work...

should be something like:

@reboot /home/ec2-user/jhprotominer-yvg1900-M7ff-linux64-core2/linux64-core2-1024M/jhprotominer -u username.worker -p password -t 32

confirm that the full path command works via command line first, that it shows up on ypool, then edit your crontab.  then reboot your server, and confirm it shows up again in ypool (takes a couple of minutes to reboot).  then you have a good working instance you can make an image from.
