Satellite vs. Fiber/Cable Internet

I am wondering if anyone has experience with satellite internet minining within the city. How is the signal reliability and latency?

They have not pulled fiber / high speed cable to this area yet. I'm only asking because listing agent mentioned this as we are looking for a warehouse.

I have no experience with satellite so hoping I can get some helpful opinions from ya guys.

We used to live in a part of a city where only "satellite" based internet connection was available. I was in college back then and wanted to play online games, sadly, i couldn't because the internet connection was unstable and i would very often get disconnected in the middle of games.

That being said, satellite should be fine for mining since mining isn't internet bandwidth or speed intensive.

As long as mining and masternodes are in the books of being reliable with satellite internet, that is good news.

Satellite internet has a HUGE latency and it can also be an unstable connection.

Bandwidth doesn't matter that much, but for mining you want the best latency available and you also want it to be as stable as possible.

If you are within the city area, I would prefer using fiber or other cable connection instead of the satellite..

What matters in mining is latency and reliability. You want your network connection to receive work and submit shares in the shortest amount of time possible to reduce stale shares. Satellite internet usually has a high latency of >500 ms, which means you will have more stale shares and less reliability compared to other broadband connection types such as cable or DSL service. If you live in a city, you should be able to get a DSL connection through the phone company and that would have a lower latency compared to standard satellite broadband connections. Even a 3G/4G wireless connection would be a better option.

I had satellite internet a few years ago when I first started mining back in the S1 days.  It worked fine, but it tore through the metered data plan that I had.  If you use satellite, make sure that you get enough metered data... or unlimited data if you can.
