There has been a big "other" part of the mining pool pie chart for a while (http://bitcoinwatch.com/). It has not been like sometimes happen when a pool has problems and a part appears as other and then it comes back. There has been a "other" part of the pie for more than one day (I dont think it has gone when I was not looking and come when I was).

What is going on? Massive solo mining? By who?

Other accounts for anyone solo mining as well as the smaller pools that aren't showing up on the list.  It's not just one person, it's just a catchall for any network hashing that doesn't fall into any of the pools listed.

You may know that ... when some large pools get ddosed(api is not available), the chart is not accurate.

total hash rate is based on time of the recent blocks. pool's rate is fetched by their api.
if everyone is unlucky(unlikely for a long period), you may see other < 0.
