Is Ripple and XRP a potential replacement for Bitcoin?

I've been reading their website.  It sounds wonderful.  But how does it work?

Not a replacement but a complement. I agree that it's brilliant. I think that what freaks out most bitcoiners is that the XRP units are all already created and therefore centrally controlled and thus suspect. But I trust that the platform will one day replace the western union style money transfer. Including internationally. Think of ease of remittances etc. The price has skyrocketed btw.
