Obviously I am a crypto currency newbie and I am looking for the right blockchain tech for a project. Now I have done some reading and what I am looking for is something like Ethereum.

1) Smart contracts
2) Low transaction fees
3) suited for micro transactions

What would be helpful if I can use Java as the programming language. Ethereum ticks point 1 but its transaction fees are too high. I am looking for really low fees as volume will be higher.

There's Waves, Stellar (XLM), Stratis, Byteball, Neo, etc.
But Ethereum fees are higher because it's the most popular.

NEM (4000tps)
LISK
WAVES
NEO. (1000tps)
STELLAR
IOTA (one day). (14000tps)
OMG

Im not 100% sure the transactions per second for the ones I missed out but these all fit your criteria

And what does not suit the etherium? Take a closer look at: NEO, WAVES, NEM. But why? Compare bitcoin with altcoins? Similarly, the etherium for other platforms is the parent and it will always be higher up.

I am looking at setting up a project - something small - it will require small micro payments of less than $2-3. So high volume (hopefully) but very small amounts.

I looked at ethereum but the transaction fees and processing time would not make it viable. I have looked at NEO and it does seem to have potential as I am correct there are no transation fees?

But I assume if there are no fees processing times are slower than if you wanted to optionally pay a fee?

I looked into IOTA but after reading  $hitcoin dot com I was put off.

You are too obvious to be new comer in crypto buddy. There are already a lot of alternative for smart contract. The top of these list will be NEO, a crypto supported by Chinese government, the Asian version of Ethereum. Or you can use Waves, when we talk about features and network performance, I think waves is the best, they just need more marketing and adoption. The last but not least the cheapest smart contract ever XLM, the good thing about XLM (Stellar) is cheap, nothing else.
But, take my advice, you can find many smart contract platform as Ethereum alternative, but nothing compared to Ethereum. It is the first and the best.

There are transaction fees in NEO but it less compared to the ethereum blockchain. But i'm not sure about when sharding and raiden will be implemented and then it looks like it can reduce the transaction fees of ethereum.

I can assume NEO is the only best candidate for you compared with another existing platform. Lisk looks good but it's not a smartcontract platform and not so popular as NEO.

I suggest you know about POA, which is a fork of ETH.
However, the POA network can run independently and transfer faster. Grin

For now there's only neo, nem and maybe waves (i don't follow it anymore so i don't know if their smart contract already released or not). Neo is the most similar to ethereum as they already have a few icos running on their chain. If you don't mind waiting then there's ada and eos which is more interesting than ethereum but they need a lot of time until ready.

NEO might be the best alternative at the present time because it is in or around the top 10 in market cap and seems to have a good development team.

I hear that IOTA may one day get into smart contracts and they have no fees because they don’t use a blockchain but rather a Tangle which is a type of DAG.

Waves is supposedly a decent project as well, but it is not as well known and I don’t know what their fees are like.

One of the best solutions that now exists apart from Ether, is it's gotten NEO. As far as I know this is a very promising system of interaction and receipt of tokens, the conclusion of smart contracts and in general this coin has a very high capitalization and can compete in Ether in the near future.

Ethereum, NEO and Waves are very powerful and very popular coins. I use all three and I am satisfied with all of them.
If you want a definite answer, definitely Ethereum.

There are some alternative coins to Ethereum but they all have their unique features that is why most people still invest in it even though there is still the features of smart contracts in it. You have to make your research well, there are coins like  Ethereum Classic (fork which originated from the normal Ethereum), NEO, LISK, EOS,Stratis, and also Waves. But like they say, some of them have high transaction fee like Ethereum.

Neo and waves are good platform besides ethereum. Neo or the nex platform allows for or can handle high volume and can do cross trade or.you can use your eth tokens in the platform. Waves is easy to use. It can be used by anyone who would want to put up their own ico.

In the last month, more and more as an alternative to the etherium is EOS. You look at his growth over the past month - he's just dizzy. He does not react to the red market, he moves apart from the pack, in general I believe in him and ready to invest in this project.

Today there are a lot of similar platforms and it seems to me that they all have smart contracts, for example, the Waves project or from those that today work for you may come up with the NEO project, so the project Komodo is also very good, if you can think of something else, you need to understand What exactly do you want.
