Hello all,

Long time reader, new poster here. I tried reading the forums looking for assistance with one of my S9's. I tried a couple of things I saw on here with no results.

About a week ago it stopped mining. The hardware version shows as blank.

I also receive a fan error in the kernel.

I have tried replacing the main board and it tells me there is a hardware mismatch and doesn't let me update it. I have tried running the update firmwares on both boards (original and replacement) from bitmains site and I get an error for every version.

I have replaced both the fans with new ones. The both kick on and seem to work, though the rpm looks a little lower than the normal 6200.

I'm kind of stumped that this point. I purchased this miner third party, so I don't know which batch it is. Probably a newb issue, but i'm not exactly sure how to find out which batch it is.

I tired comparing the logs to my other miners, but I'm not that technical and it all blurs together to me...

If anyone could point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it.

-Matt

The S9 will not mine if it does not detect both fans. If you have tested the fans and are sure that the issue is not with any one fan, you should try plugging into one fan socket at a time to see if the problem is linked to one of the fan sockets on the controller board. Perhaps a connector is loose and could be fixed?

If the miner is still under warranty, consider sending it to Bitmain for repair. Otherwise, it sounds like you might need to replace the controller board. Bitmain does sell them from the official shop, albeit for $60 each. There are instructions for replacement and firmware upgrade on the page as well:

I have never seen any error messages directly mentioning hardware mismatch and would be curious to read that error message if you have a copy. Best of luck troubleshooting this issue.

Tim,

I appreciate the fast response.

It is out of warranty... stopped working a few weeks out of it.

I just finished doing some more troubleshooting. I think I nixed the control board being the issue.

With the control board, I used my spare board which is in working condition, and the problem still lead me back to the fans with the same error.

I tested the board on my other S9 and it fired right up. No problems.

I figured out what I was doing wrong with the firmware flash. The control boards were also flashed and the fan error still came up.

The only thing I haven't done is take apart one of my working miners and try there fans. I don't want to take something apart that works to test another one.

As of this post, I just put two new fans in (replacing the two replacment fans I originally put in). Same specs as the stock fans. It's been sitting on "checking fans" since i booted it up. I'm going to give that a little more time and see what comes of that.

Oh well, at least this problem usually has an easy fix, although it is strange that the issue seems to be with neither the fans nor the controller board...

One thing I would try, since you seem to only be detecting one fan, is to boot up with the front fan unplugged and then boot up with the back fan unplugged to see which one is not being detected. The fact that you mentioned that the boot is hanging on "Checking fans!" indicates that perhaps neither fan is being detected. Out of curiosity, have you tried a different power supply? Perhaps there was some fault and your psu is now delivering less than 12 volts.
