How do you do it? I got 10 blades, backplane, and this http://www.ebay.com/itm/331069043923 and it doesnt turn on. 12v standby is working, but no full 12v. I tested it with multimeter and shorting pins 33 to 36 as shown in http://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?p=5226152 and my multimeter shows 12v on the fat tabs and it turned on then. But how do I turn it on in backplane???

Sigh. So it looks like "Common Slot" power supplies aren't actually "common slot". The "other" pins are different between models. For my platinum rated power supply, the pins 33 and 36 shorting will cause the power supply to turn on. But for the backplane, it looks like 31 and 34 will turn on the power supply while at the same time pin 32 is hardwired to the 12v. So much for platinum power supply.

This p/s is for the DL385G5P server line, much heavier duty than the p/s that the backplane was designed for (DL380G5)

The good news is that the pins needed to turn this on are exposed already at the back of the p/s connector of the backplane. Just run some light duty (+/- 22awg) wire from those two pins and connect them to an external switch. Or if you you just want the power supply on whenever plugged in to the backplane, just run a small jumper between the two pins.

Please make sure and check the power polarity on the backplane once it's running. You don't know if it's reversed compared to the regular p/s.

With a soldering iron, this should take less than 30 seconds to do.

Cheers

HP 403781-001 DL380 G5 1000W Power Supply

http://www.amazon.com/HP-403781-001-DL380-1000W-Supply/dp/B001U0EM1W

Also, search eBay for DPS-800GBA-HP ML350/370 DL380 G5 1000W POWER SUPPLY

I've got mine for $44 shipped.

These were designed for  HP ProLiant DL380 G5 line of servers.

Mind you, under full load the tiny fans will SCREAM.

http://home.comcast.net/~bacanj/btc/fans.jpg

This is my mod but I've learned that the PSU uses PWM fans and will not work with any other kind, so I'm waiting for new fans to arrive to finally silence my screaming rigs.

That's the right PSU.

Do you mean the PSU won't turn on?
Use a multimeter to test and see if it's outputting any voltage.  Also, check to make sure the power jumper is installed on your backpane, since that's the "power on switch."  Do all this prior to plugging on your blades.

If PSU turns on, but blades don't, then make sure you didn't blow the blade's fuse w/ the wrong supply that you plugged in...

Is the jumper installed on the backplane?

If the jumper is there, the p/s should come on when power is applied.

The jumper is installed. One of the power supplies eventually sprang to life, presumable after it warmed up to room temperature. The other one though still refuses to power on. I think it's dead on arrival. I tried shorting pins 31 to 34 (it worked for the first correct psu) and it doesnt turn on

Actually, the "other" pins are different, and I dont want to mess around with ruining/cutting the backplane traces. I tried shorting the proper power on pins, but because other pins were being shorted due to the backplane, the power supply did a horrid screeching sound and didnt power on, so I unplugged it before it was damaged. I already returned them for the "usual" power supplies, which I'm currently having problems with as stated above

Have you tried plugging the blades into a normal 12v 8A source??  You may have damaged something if the other incorrect power supply turned on while the blades were plugged in... such as overvolting or shorting something out.

The other PSU you have seems to be dead... it's not always the best idea to buy the cheapest possible item either.
