Rack mount case?

Ended up with one of these: http://www.directron.com/cs4801.html?gsear=1 (Seems very similar to that codegen 4U-600)...had to remove the 3.5" drive rack to make room for the GPU card, but I didn't need it anyway and it's better without it since it was between the fan and the GPU card.

None of the 4U rackmount cases I've seen are space efficient at all unfortunately.

With a standard 4U rack you can easily fit 2 motherboards (with 4 cards each) and 2 PSUs if you just leave them on a tray.

The whole point for a rack mountable case, is so you can mount the cases in a rack. I want to be able to mount 10 4U cases in a rack. You can't colo motherboards on a tray.

Who cares about space efficiency? The only thing that really matter for mining is cooling ability (IMO).

Trying to colo with a rack will kill yiou price wise. Seriously Colo power is not cheaper than at home. On top, most colo do not hadnle the power usage. FOr example my Colo is limiting me to 20 ampere per regular rack High power racks go to 40 - for 1500 EUR a month for the actively cooled rack. Power extra.

THink you get flatrate? Sure... for like 250 watt power consumption for a case. Nice, but not suitable for mining.

That said we are just planning a 5 rack units case for 6 cards, possibly 10 (for a long version). Availability within 3 months.

Made to house tesla's. Now, the price seemed terrible to meat first, until I read that it includes a 1200W PSU. Now I wonder how good the PSU is, as I didn't find any specs on it.

We use Chenbro cases in our server farm. They are good quality cases. Get one without a power supply. I recommend this model:

Our racks include 3x 20-amp circuits. That's enough juice for about 10 systems per rack. Cooling is provided by a Cold Aisle Containment setup like this:

What? Most data centres allow you to colo non rack equipment on steel trays. Considering that you're paying for space, of course space efficiency is important. I pay half the price per rig when I squeeze 2 rigs into a 4U rack. Cooling ability in a DC? Just let it rip with some 5000 RPM fans and not worry about the noise.

It sounds like you haven't thought this through carefully.

Is the Chenbro PSU not good? I mean, the 1200W PSU for that price in a decent case would be pretty awesome, but that depends on it's quality, of course.

The Chenbro you linked only seems to have 7 expansion ports on the back, how easy is it to "modify" to accept 4 GPU's?

I considered that case but the problem is the cooling sucks. Don't buy if you run more than one card. Cooling is KING!

Well if he has his rack in a basement or unused room there is no reason he couldn't slam a 5k rpm fan in the front and one in the back. I'd search on ebay for some of the metal fans the old HP servers used to use, those things never break down (had one running in a data centre for over 6 years solid, never been turned off).

I think I remember the fans you're talking about. I had a large Compaq DB cluster box (where two servers were combined with attached SCSI storage) that had big black metal fans inside.

Is it possible to use risers in the pci 1x slots in a 4u case? I've never seen a 4u case in person so I have no clue how big it is. I understand you can fit big cards and most cpu coolers, but is there enough space to mount cards on a riser somehow?
