One year and nearly $3 billion later, the Tron blockchain is set to finally put its much-debated technology to the test.

At least, that's what should happen Monday, when Tron completes the token swap it began last week, migrating the last of its users' funds from ethereum to a new proprietary blockchain. For investors, the moment marks a historic "independence day" of sorts, but it could more broadly become a make-or-break moment for the project, which though controversial, already finds itself among the top cryptocurrencies globally.

Founded last July, Tron has set out to "decentralize the internet." However, the project has yet to rigorously define what this means in practice.

And while Tron's rhetoric may seemingly resemble that of many cryptocurrencies that emerged from  2017's token boom, the project is distinguished by the size of its funding and the outspokenness of its founder, former Ripple representative Justin Sun, who last week caused a stir in the tech world by purchasing the company behind file-sharing service BitTorrent.

Some onlookers speculated that Sun made the acquisition to lend legitimacy to his project - something it has been accused of lacking on more than one occasion.

Shocked Singapore Reaping USD 270,000 Each from ‘ICO Refugees’  Shocked

Singaporean companies are garnering rich benefits from South Korea’s ICO (initial coin offering) ban, per blockchain experts in both countries.
Media outlet Finance Today quotes the owner of a South Korean company that has recently launched an ICO in Singapore as saying, “It costs up to USD 270,000 in consultancy and legal fees for a South Korean company to launch an ICO here. And on top of that, we need to pay our taxes to the Singaporean government – not to Seoul.”

Angry Crypto-Related Crime Might Be Top Cyberattack of 2018  Angry

According to a cybersecurity expert, crypto is where the real danger lies this year, as cyberattacks related to the nascent industry will surpass all other types.
Lotem Finkelsteen is a threat intelligence analyst with the Israeli cybersecurity company Check Point Software Technologies who warns that cryptocurrency is a hotbed for cybercrime right now. “Not a day goes by without our hearing about a new ICO (initial coin offering) scam or mining attack,” he said, according to Times of Israel.

A long-held bitcoin secret is about to be revealed.

No, it's not the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, it's a private key the cryptocurrency's creator entrusted to several bitcoin developers that activates the protocol's so-called "alert system," once used to flash a text warning to those running the software in case something happened that could impact the security of their funds.

If you didn't know bitcoin had a warning system like this, that's because it was retired in 2016 due to security concerns and frequent confusion about its use.

"The alert system was a frequent source of misunderstanding about the security model and 'effective governance,'" well-known Bitcoin Core contributor Greg Maxwell wrote in a public email from September 2016.

In short, some in the bitcoin community thought it could be used to change that network rules that unite users, which isn't really the case. For example, a BitcoinJ developer once wanted to use the key to control fees, while a Bloq staffer pressed for Bitcoin Core developers to use the key to change the network's mining difficulty.

Tether, the company behind the controversial, yet all-important cryptocurrency pegged to the US dollar, on Monday issued USD 250 million in new USDT tokens.
New Tether tokens being issued means more money is making its way into the cryptocurrency market, which could help set the stage for a price comeback in a market that has seen heavy selling over the past two months.

Cryptocurrencies have always been the target of speculation and skepticism: from great economists expressing their disbelief in them, to Warren Buffett calling it rat poison squared, the space has not had much rest since its inception. Today, it would seem that the short-term prospects look much worse than the long-term.

Banks Are Trying to Launch Crypto Assets with R3 Tech

It may have seemed unthinkable four years ago, but crypto tokens might be coming to R3's Corda.
Revealed exclusively to CoinDesk, Cordite, an open-source community that's independent from R3, but building solely on the code it pioneered, is about to come out of stealth mode.
