ALT Currencies - Which Ones Are Actually Adding Value to the Community

When I saw SexCoin introduced, I think my head actually began to spin.

With so many different alts being introduced, and currently being traded - I Ask...

...Do any of these actually make improvements to the community? Do any of these demonstrate innovation?

Or are they ALL just poor clones of what is already there, designed to create speculation.

What are your thoughts?

IMO alts are really important for this cryptocurrency train to keep going, especially with BTC price being so high above what the average person can purchase.

1) It gives newbies something to mine -- it is quite pointless to mine bitcoin directly as an average person even with a decent computer, but a month of mining can grab a newbie a decent amount of altcoins
2) It gives people something to speculate on and trade
3) It's a fun game that can make you money, what's not to like?

I would say, though, I think LTC, XPM, and PPC though are the standout ones, in that order.

Hands down TAG. There is not another alt that can compete with its professional services and development. The rest are hobby coins.

PPC, XPM, NXT and the nearly-forgot Timekoin are the most innovative ones.

PPC = adds proof-of-stake as a new security concept, consumes much less energy than BTC and most altcoins. Also an innovative coin supply model with steady, very low inflation (< 1 % / year)
XPM = new hashing algorithm which searches prime number chains (useful for mathematicians)
NXT = "proof-of-stake only" coin with fixed "coin cap". Highly experimental, but seems to work.
Timekoin = separated hashing / coin creation. Seems interesting, I only doubt a bit about the security model.

SXC is one of the few alts that can be used to purchase over 3700 real products right now, how many other coins can say that, or have any use outside mining and exchanging for BTC whatsoever...
