I've set about 10k aside to play with for btc. Been researching since mid october (freaking shoot me, I should have just bought coins!)
Now that we've broken 1k, investing 10k in 10 coins seems pretty damn high risk.
I'm thinking a lower risk solution would be to invest in mining hardware that is available this second (ebay maybe knc's) and mine for a month or two while it's still decently profitable, then sell the equipment to someone who can afford to ride it out until it's mining is unprofitable here in 6-12 months.
That way I grab a few coins + get my cash back to buy more coins.
I've ran some number and this seems like a good solution, as long as BTC doesn't TRIPLE again in the next three months.
That seems ridiculous, right?. But I thought it was ridiculous that it would ever jump from 200 to 1000 in 3 months. fml.
The other option I'm wondering about is mining LTC? Could I spent 10k on LTC mining equipment and get the same results as spending 10k on hundreds of GHs of asics equipment?
Last but not least, why in the world am I hearing horror stories of getting money back out of mtgox?! If I have 10k in BTC and I need to jump into a stock I have cover that margin call in 3 days and I'd rather not use my savings. People are saying upwards of 15 weeks??? That can't be right?

Mine LTC, if all else fails on that sell your initial investment of GPU's, simple.

Id generally suggest mining. But with all the hashing power soon to come online in the coming months it makes me wonder if any of the currently available units will ROI. Plus BTC price generally goes up with difficulty so maybe investing is the way to go. I guess if I had 10k id invest half and buya preorder 2TH from somewhere with the other half and see how it igoes.

Depends on your electricity cost. Before making any investments on hardware, use mining profitability calculators. Litecoin mining is all about electricity cost...

I almost forgot about that, seeing as I have almost always mined without paying for it. (I suddenly feel guilty about the damage I have done. )

Is the conversion rate of mining LTC and converting higher than the speculative price of BTC right now?Do you convert LTC directly into BTC or hold and wait for LTC to do it's elastic value adjustment to maintain speed with BTC and THEN convert? (Seems like the second option there) The other option I'm wondering about is mining LTC? That isn't too bad considering that's 2 months out of 12 in the year.

I've tried all kinds of calculators for mining equipment and all come up with different results. I would get into mining if I knew I'd get at least 90% of the initial investment. One I am very interested in is black arrow both X-1 and X-3 look tempting and seem to be shortest to the market but as everyone said mining hardware is a gamble when it comes to preorders. So right now I am researching and souring every piece of information as to which piece of hardware to go with if I decide to do so(yup very indecisive until moment I commit which has cost me a few opportunities so far but not anymore).

Yeah but at the same time profit-coin pools aren't always profitable. Just mine litecoin and for sure have the money you invest in, bitcoin is slowly losing profitability for single people and litecoin is still uber profitable for single miner configs or small farms.

Litecoin and Bitcoin go hand in hand, I honestly don't know why soo many people are making varied copies of the main scrypt coin.
