The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

When will we see an entire day (24 hour period, UTC time) of purely level-headed, good-mannered discussion here on Bitcointalk.org, without trolling or hyperbole? The winner gets 1 BTC.

Caveats:
-The forum being inaccessible, abandoned or otherwise quiet doesn't count.
-Answer must be a definite time. "never" doesn't count!
-If you actually take this offer seriously I'll have to set some sane deadline. 2020 is too long to wait.

Selling out to advertisers shows you respect neither yourself nor the rest of us.

"China's government banned financial institutions from trading in bitcoin on Thursday"  (not from banking  individual account holders).

I would hope that financial institutions can't trade it.. that's not what bitcoin is meant for

Allow me to reiterate:

中国人民银行等五部委发文,要求防范比特币风险。通知明确表示比特币是一种特定的虚拟商品,不具有与货币等同的法律地位,不能且不应作为货币在市场上流通使用。

Translation: The People’s Bank of China has issued a statement requiring guard and wariness regarding Bitcoin’s risk. In a clear notification statement, Bitcoin is a type of particular fictitious and theoretical commodity, not one possessing the status of legal, and moreover cannot act as circulating currency in the market.

This does NOT just apply to financial companies and banks, as is clearly stated from the PBOC development today.

More in the link I posted.

Cao, managine director at Lightspeet Venture Partners, which recently invested $5 million in BTC China, said he would not be surprised to see the value of bitcoins fall as much as 50 percent over the next week or two.

China didn't ban bitcoin. I have read all the press releases, all the translations, all the articles. China didn't ban bitcoin.

"China banned bitcoin" is a very general, vague, all-encompassing statement. It implies that, well, China banned bitcoin. It would imply that Bitcoin is wholly illegal in China, much like guns are in jurisdictions where guns are illegal and drugs in jurisdictions where drugs are illegal. Problem? It didn't "ban" bitcoin. It issued regulations including that major financial institutions could not deal in bitcoin. It said that businesses dealing in it would need to follow AML/KYC laws to be put forth in the future. Likely similar to the USA's FINCEN guidance.

But, keep repeating "china bans bitcoin" and maybe 1% of readers will believe you without fact-checking first. I have respect for rational bulls and rational bears alike, but not fud-spewers of either variety. That includes both "2-da-mooners" (on every tiny piece of lukewarm news) and "bitcoin is doomed" on every over-embellished piece of tepid news.

An inch= $150+

Don't look at dollars, look at percentage.  When Bitcoin was $120 this change would have been barely over 10% ($12)

More importantly- bitcoin hasn't crashed in China. It's down a bit, but not more then typical pump/dump trading. Considering they have been up reading this stuff for hours if it really was doom and gloom I would have expected to see something much more dramatic from them. Obviously they don't seem to be overly spooked by this news.

EDIT: after all they have been trading just happily up till now without bank involvement.

more or less retired.
