ad revenue

as long as your adspace costs more than the hosting and satoshis you can run a profitable site

One average google adsense click gives you $1 (1mBTC). An average faucet gives out .000001 everyday, which means with one single random click by anyone on the ad banners, the faucet owner can pay 1000 people asking for faucet money everyday   Grin

Your insight is spot on, giving away free money is not a very sustainable business, as witnessed by the long list of defunct faucets.

Faucets are great to help get people involved in the BTC community, but now that the amount given is so low, it risks turning people off because of high fees.

A few adsense clicks can help, but Google often takes a dim view of faucets and many don't make it as they are subject to abuse by bots.

So usually it is because of the owners wish to help others learn more about bitcoin, demonstrate their programming ability, and maybe get a few ad clicks.  Dailybitcoins is the longest running one I know of.

Good Luck and welcome.

It is a waste of time.
Maybe the owners can get a few bucks per months, but users are getting nothing ...

I run a faucet site, and Ad Revenue is honestly just a bonus for me. I don't make a lot off of ad revenue anyway. Like many others, we do it to promote Bitcoins. I only started my faucet to promote bitcoins on a certain website.

So far I got about 1000 users after a week.
I made 0.02 BTC so far from ad revenue.
I gave out about 0.007 BTC last week, and 0.003 the previous week.

So you are giving 50% to users from ads income?

You can get a lot of money if you reach enough users.
